San Francisco Giants outfielder Eugenio Velez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a head contusion and concussion suffered as a result of being hit by a foul ball during Saturday’s game against Arizona.
During the top of the fourth inning, the Giants’ Pat Burrell fouled a ball toward the San Francisco dugout. The ball smacked Velez, who immediately fell to the ground.
Video replays show Velez was standing at the dugout railing along with other teammates, who immediately rushed to his aid after he went down.
After being attended to by trainers, he was put on a stretcher and taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Phoenix, where he was released Sunday evening.
So far this season, Velez is hitting .196 with two homers and eight RBI in 21 games.
The Giants recalled infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A Fresno.
