Giants sign Elmer Dessens
The San Francisco Giants have signed relief pitcher Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract according to the right-handers’ agent, Fernando Ballesteros.
Dessens, 40, can take home as much as $600,000 if he spends the entire season in the majors, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Last season, Dessens went 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 1.213 WHIP in 53 appearances with the New York Mets, mostly as a middle-to-late-inning reliever. The 14-year veteran also received offers from the Seattle Martiners and Baltimore Orioles, according to Ballesteros.
In Dessens and recent minor league signing Jeff Suppan, the Giants now have a pair of seasoned sinkerballers in the mix for relief innings alongside high-strikeout righties like Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla.
