Left-handed pitcher Dan Runzler got the news this morning from manager Bruce Bochy that he will open the regular season with the San Francisco Giants.

Runzler, 26, was lights out this spring, striking out 17 batters in 16.1 innings and posting a 2.20 ERA.

He’s not exactly a newcomer to the big leagues. Runzler pitched in 41 games last year and compiled a 3-0 record with a 3.03 ERA and 1.500 WHIP. He had a 10.2 K/9 rate. He also appeared in 11 games in 2009.

Runzler grabbed one of two last bullpen spots remaining for the World Champs. Guillermo Mota is expected to grab the other spot, which would mean Marc Kroon, Steve Edlefsen and Ryan Vogelsong will start the season in the minors (unless they ask to be released).
