Giants re-sign Wilmin Rodriguez
He was one of the Giants’ 17 minor league players granted free agency earlier this month. (See the full list here.)
Originally signed by the Giants as a non-drafted free agent on Mar. 24, 2004, Rodriguez went a combined 4-3 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.601 WHIP, and 1.48 SO:BB ratio for Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Fresno last season.
Rodriguez was one of 22 non-roster invitees last year, too, and was reassigned to minor league camp in mid-March. He did fairly well in some spot starts at Richmond late last season, but doesn’t show Major League potential right now.
He relies mostly on his slider and fastball, which tops out at 89 mph. His pitches have OK movement and he has pretty decent control, but he’s terrible against righties and at age 26, Rodriguez has little-to-no shot of making the big league team out of camp.
