Tim Lincecum rejects Giants’ $100 million dollar offer

Take this with a grain of salt. After all, it’s coming from CBS Sports, the network that reported Joe Paterno’s death—while he was still alive.

According to Jon Heyman, ace pitcher Tim Lincecum recently rejected a five-year contract offer by the San Francisco Giants for $100 million dollars:

The Giants appear to be tens of millions apart on a long deal with Lincecum after he rebuffed their offer for five years and nine figures and he countered much higher than that. It is thought Lincecum seeks a deal for seven or eight years but would be content to do a one- or two-year contract if no megadeal can be accomplished now.

In his article, which was curiously posted during the San Francisco 49ers-New York Giants NFC Championship game Sunday, Heyman went on to write:

Lincecum, who has so far gone year to year (in arbitration), seems more likely to wind up with a two-year deal now rather than sign a contract into his free-agent years.

Timmy will be eligible for free agency in 2014.

When the two sides submitted their arbitration figures last week, the Giants offered $17 million dollars for 2012; Lincecum countered with $21.5 million dollars.

A five-year, $100 million deal would pay the two-time Cy Young award winner $20 million a year (average), or $3 million dollars a year more than the Giants’ offer last week and only $1.5 million short of Lincecum’s request.

If Heyman’s report is accurate, it would appear to me that the Freak is holding out for every last penny he can get.
