Spring training recap—Day 8

Kind of a slow day today in Scottsdale, on this, the eighth day of spring training.

My notes will be somewhat abbreviated…

Tim Lincecum threw a bullpen session today and showed no lingering effects from a stiff back that kept him out of action for part of last week.

Ryan Vogelsong is scheduled to resume throwing activities tomorrow, after being shut down for a week-and-a-half due to a strained back.

In case you think Giants general manager Brian Sabean doesn’t do his due diligence when looking at trade targets, think again. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle has a nice write-up in today’s Chron about all the research and leg work that went into acquiring outfielder Melky Cabrera. Check it out here.

Remember the story I wrote last year about Juan Uribe‘s midnight fish fry? Well, it looks like the landlord of the former Giants infielder is taking Uribe to court next week to finally get him to pay up for the $145,000 in damages that allegedly resulted from a fire that erupted in the player’s kitchen.

Uribe was a total bust last year for the Dodgers. After signing a three-year, $21 million dollar contract, the 32-year-old played in just 77 games and hit a meager .204 for Los Angeles, prompting someone to create this now-famous Uribe tumblr site.

The trial begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday so Uribe will have to miss the first day of Dodgers camp (and possible longer) while he takes care of this legal matter, something you’d think a multi-million-dollar athlete would have done by now.

Giants CEO Larry Baer was in Scottsdale today and told reporters that he thinks the Giants will probably sell out the entire season again.

Baer also spoke about the Matt Cain contract situation, telling reporters that the team is still very much interested in “putting a lot of energy” into signing Cain long-term. Cain has gone on record as saying he won’t be giving the Giants a hometown discount this time around and insisting on getting “fair value.” This one will probably go down to the wire, as Cain wants a new deal before Opening Day. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
