San Francisco Giants players sit in the dugout as a swarm of bees rest on the fence during the second inning of a spring training baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Sunday, March 4, 2012, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The game was delayed for 41 minutes because of a swarm of bees. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)One of the main reasons Major League Baseball holds spring training in Arizona and Florida is because of the sunny weather. Very rarely are there late-Winter/early-Spring storms in those regions this time of year, which makes for a perfectly-uninterrupted exhibition season.

Almost.

Nobody accounted for an “insect delay.”

With the Arizona Diamondbacks-San Francisco Giants Cactus League game still scoreless in the second inning, play had to be halted for about 45 minutes Sunday when a swarm of bumblebees suddenly descended upon Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

The game was nearly cancelled, but the groundskeeper crew was able to corral the bees to the Giants dugout area (using cotton candy and lemonade!) and play was resumed.

Catcher Hector Sanchez wasted no time getting the Giants going again, stinging the first pitch he saw from pitcher Barry Enright to drive in the game’s first run. (Enright replaced starter Ian Kennedy, whose arm got cold after the long delay.)

San Francisco (1-1-1) went on to collect 20 more hits in the game and blasted the Snakes, 11-1, for their first win of the spring. Arizona fell to 1-1.

Top hitter: H. Sanchez (3-for-3, 3 RBI)
Top pitcher: Kown (2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, W)
Key moment: Sanchez’s post-bee-delay single to drive in the game’s first run.

The Giants will host the Brewers on Monday night at Scottsdale Stadium. Matt Cain will start. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and first pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. PT.

NOTES: Sanchez, who homered on Saturday, leads the Giants with an .800 average (4-for-5) and 4 RBI … Giants lefty Brian Burres was also pulled after the delay. He allowed one hit in his one inning of action … New Giants infielder Ryan Theriot went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in his Giants debut … Brett Pill also had a fantastic game, going 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs batted in … New Giants outfielders Angel Pagan and Melky Cabrera each went 2-for-4 … Aubrey Huff was 2-for-3 and Mike Fontenot went 3-for-4 with a double … Former Giants pitcher Joe Martinez was rocked in his Snakes debut. Martinez allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk in two innings … New Giants right-hander Clay Hensley did not report any problems after a bullpen session. He has been dealing with a right hamstring issue … Giants prospect Francisco Peguero told reporters today that he is nearly 100 percent healthy after having a second right knee surgery during the off-season. He might play in a game on Tuesday … The game was sold out as Salt River Fields set a record with 12,568 in attendance.
