Giants 11, Diamondbacks 1
One of the main reasons Major League Baseball holds spring training in Arizona and Florida is because of the sunny weather. Very rarely are there late-Winter/early-Spring storms in those regions this time of year, which makes for a perfectly-uninterrupted exhibition season.
Nobody accounted for an “insect delay.”
With the Arizona Diamondbacks-San Francisco Giants Cactus League game still scoreless in the second inning, play had to be halted for about 45 minutes Sunday when a swarm of bumblebees suddenly descended upon Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
The game was nearly cancelled, but the groundskeeper crew was able to corral the bees to the Giants dugout area (using cotton candy and lemonade!) and play was resumed.
Catcher Hector Sanchez wasted no time getting the Giants going again, stinging the first pitch he saw from pitcher Barry Enright to drive in the game’s first run. (Enright replaced starter Ian Kennedy, whose arm got cold after the long delay.)
San Francisco (1-1-1) went on to collect 20 more hits in the game and blasted the Snakes, 11-1, for their first win of the spring. Arizona fell to 1-1.
|Top hitter: H. Sanchez (3-for-3, 3 RBI)
Top pitcher: Kown (2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, W)
Key moment: Sanchez’s post-bee-delay single to drive in the game’s first run.
The Giants will host the Brewers on Monday night at Scottsdale Stadium. Matt Cain will start. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and first pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. PT.
