Giants 3, Cubs 2
Eric Surkamp will probably start the season in Fresno, but if the Giants need an emergency starter, they know they have a decent arm just a couple hundred miles down the freeway.
Surkamp subdued the Chicago Cubs this afternoon at Hohokam Park, helping the Giants win their 10th spring training game, by a score of 3-2. [box score]
The Giants’ left-hander went four strong innings, allowing just one run on four scattered hits and a walk. Surkamp struck out four and improved his Cactus League record to 2-1. The only real mistake he made was a leadoff homer to Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo in the second inning.
Emmanuel Burriss went 2-for-2 and stole his fourth base of the spring. With a robust .414 batting average, great speed, and versatility with the glove, he’s making a strong case for the Giants’ final utility spot.
|Top Giants hitter: Burriss (2-for-2, 2B, R, SB)
Top Giants pitcher: Surkamp (4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 K, 1 BB, W)
Key moment of the game: Huff’s one-out single to score Sandoval with the go-ahead run in the 4th inning.
The Giants (10-4-2) will split their squads tomorrow with one team traveling to Glendale to take on the Dodgers (8-3) at 7:05 p.m. (PT). Left-hander Brian Burres (1-0, 1.80) goes up against Aaron Harang (1-0, 5.40).
The Giants-A’s game can be seen on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area and MLB Network and heard on KNBR. The Giants-Dodgers contest will be televised on the MLB Network and can be heard via web stream at MLB.com’s online Media Center.
NOTES: Buster Posey caught five innings today and went 1-for-2 with a walk. The plan is for him to go six innings on Tuesday. In the meantime, he’ll work on his hitting by appearing as the leadoff man in a minors game tomorrow (where the hope is he’ll get at least five at bats) … No doubt Posey will be the Giants’ regular catcher come Opening Day, but who will be his backup? Manager Bruce Bochy still hasn’t tipped his hand whether it will be Eli Whiteside, Chris Stewart or Hector Sanchez. Whiteside sure made a case for himself today, nabbing not one, but two, would-be base stealers today in the sixth inning … Danny Otero notched his third save with a scoreless ninth inning … The Giants officially assigned infielder Angel Villalona to the minors. Villalona has been stuck in the Dominican Republic, trying to get his visa cleared … Sergio Romo has a sore elbow and has been unavailable to pitch the past few days. There’s no timetable on his return.
