Let’s play two! Giants will split squad against A’s and Dodgers
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Get your green on…as in grassy infields, outfields, and lush lawn seats! (And if you happen to have one of those sick green Giants lids, rock it!)
The Giants (10-4-2) will split their squads today, with one team traveling to Camelback Ranch in Glendale to take on the Dodgers (8-3) at 7:05 p.m. (PT). Left-hander Brian Burres (1-0, 1.80) goes up against Aaron Harang (1-0, 5.40).
The other squad will host the Oakland A’s (11-3) at Scottsdale Stadium at 1:05 p.m. (PT). Tim Lincecum (1-0, 6.75) will face Tommy Milone (1-0, 3.12).
The Giants-A’s game can be seen on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area and MLB Network and heard on KNBR. The Giants-Dodgers contest will be televised on the MLB Network and can be heard via web stream at MLB.com’s online Media Center.

Pre-game notes: Hector Sanchez is batting fifth in the lineup and playing catcher against the Dodgers and Eli Whiteside is playing catcher vs. the A’s. My spidey sense tells me Chris Stewart may have lost his grip on the backup backstop job … Me thinks time is also running out on Brett Pill. The Giants have him at first base today with Brandon Belt in left in the Dodgers game. I just can’t see both players making the 25-man roster … The pitchers will bat in the evening game … Ryan Vogelsong faced live hitters for the first time this spring, during a BP session earlier today … Through 16 Cactus League games, the Giants have outscored their opponents 89-63. The always-informative Volcanoes Watching blog notes that using the statistical metric of “runs scored against runs allowed” to project wins and losses, this ratio equates to a 95-67 season … VW also notes that the Giants’ estimated 2012 payroll is $139.7 million (which is 2nd-highest in the NL behind Philadelphia). For comparison purposes, Oakland’s projected 2012 payroll is $59.4 million (gotta love that Moneyball). The Dodgers’ projected 2012 payroll, meanwhile, is $103.4 million dollars (8th-highest in the NL). Many insiders suspect the Dodgers are ramping up for an all-out free agent spending frenzy when the new owners take over next year. One of the names being mentioned? Matt Cain. Gulp! … According to the Associated Press’s Jane McCauley, Giants VP Bobby Evans says there’s no update on Angel Villalona‘s visa status in the Dominican Republic. You may remember a month ago, Villalona was deemed “too unfit as an elite athlete” to qualify for a visa. The 21-year-old was optioned to Class-A San Jose yesterday nonetheless.
