Last night, the San Francisco Giants won their 94th game of the year with a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and — like me — Gigantes fans everywhere rejoiced in the fact that the team sent their hated rival packing for the offseason.

It’s certainly not the first time these two teams have been involved in eliminating each other from the post-season.

In fact, fifty years ago today, one of the greatest pennant races came to an end—with a game that was both great and greatly appropriate.

The Dodgers didn’t just lose, they choked it away. The Giants barely had to do anything to earn the win—they just had to step out of the way while the Dodgers fumbled the pennant to them.

Chris Jaffe has the whole story — plus other San Francisco Giants historical happenings from this date — over at The Hardball Times.
