By Dave Parker Fran Johnson is relaxing after finishing her baking for Beanery Joe’s and reminiscing about her recently deceased husband, Carl and thinking about the upcoming wedding of her friends David Bellwood and Cecelia Jones. Then a strange dog comes running up her driveway, with a tall man shouting “Chester!” chasing after it. In moments, Fran realizes it is her first love, Michael Bellwood, just as he recognizes her. Michael is in town for the wedding of his son, David, and Cecelia Jones – two of Fran’s best friends. Old memories rush forward, reminding her of her teen-age love for Michael – and her betrayal when he unexpectedly married someone else.Divorced several times, Michael also remembers his first love. He is still strongly attracted to her, and hopes to rekindle the feelings she once had for him. As their attraction for each other becomes more apparent over succeeding days, Fran’s son Nick becomes angry over the thought that his mother could be attracted to someone else so soon after his father Carl’s untimely death.Although Cecelia has asked Fran to be her Matron of Honor, David asks Fran not to attend the wedding – his mother, Michael’s first wife, will be there – and she hates Fran. Heartbroken to miss her friends’ wedding, she is left struggling with what to do with her life. Carl is gone, and her son and friends question her new/old relationship. Fran’s memories of Carl and her ongoing love for him struggle against her renewed interest in Michael. This story is well done. It is filled with competing questions and situations, all made more difficult by nosy townsfolk and Cecelia’s overbearing mother Sandra. Nick’s rejection of her new/old relationship as a betrayal of his father hurts Fran, but becomes pivotal in helping her to look forward. The period between the wedding just before Thanksgiving and Christmas becomes a time of readjustment and renewal for all. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Character of Fran is a real stand-out! By Colleen M. Chesebro *I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book*I like nothing better than finding a character from an earlier book starring in their own book! That is exactly what P. C. Zick did. I read and reviewed Mountain Miracles and the character of Fran, was a real standout! This novel is written as a continuation of Mountain Miracles and one of the sweetest romances. Not only that, but the characters leap off the page as if you already know them.Fran does the baking for Beanery Joe’s, a local coffee shop owned by Cecelia Jones. Fran’s husband, Carl, is recently deceased. Life has dealt a blow to Fran, and she isn’t sure how to cope. The one shining light that helps to keep Fran moving forward is the impending marriage of her friends, Cecelia Jones and David Bellwood. When David’s father, Michael shows up to attend the wedding, Fran realizes he is her long-lost boyfriend from high school. It doesn’t take long for the old sparks to ignite feelings that Fran and Michael had hidden for years. The fact that Michael betrayed her and married someone else complicates their friendship. To make matters worse, Fran’s son Nick, and Michael’s son, David, struggle with their parents’ new-found relationship. Fran’s memories of Carl and their life together muddle things further ensuing in plenty of fireworks.Fran is one of the most endearing characters I have read in a long time. I really connected with her and felt the pain of her loss, and the joy of her new love. P. C. Zick deftly spins a love story that is poignant and real. If I met Fran today, I would want her as my friend. This story is more a journey of healing for both families. It centers on dealing with life and the choices we made in the past and learning how to forgive, and move on. The theme of getting a second chance at love resonates through the entire story.I read quickly to find out what happened next. I could not put the book down. If you love a romance where the characters walk off the page to meet you, this is the book for you. I loved it!My Rating:Character Believability: 5Flow and Pace: 5Reader Engagement: 5Reader Enrichment: 5Reader Enjoyment: 5Overall Rate: 5 out of 5 stars 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What a great read!! By Kindle Customer49 Although sometimes portrayed in film too simplistically, this touching, insightful, and well-written novel gives the reader a ringside seat to seeing what it’s really like for a middle age woman to lose her husband of thirty-five years. Right off the bat, we are pulled in. We feel her empty house along with her, understand her insecurity about no longer feeling attractive, and empathize with her resentment of having to make a 180 degree turn in life when most people are settling down for the duration.Yet Fran is on her way to recovery, surrounded by family and a great gal-pal of the millennial persuasion. When in comes a man from her past to stir things up, that could have turned into a cliché, but in the capable hands of this author it becomes romantic but not formulaic. Complications arise, feelings are hurt or not expressed, and we see through her how trying to create a new life isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Once again, this lovely story’s take on life’s second chances is the genuine article, not a Hollywood version. Highly recommended. See all 5 customer reviews...
