By Emerald Eyes Yep, there's alot of variety here and this was a very fun and fast paced little collection of short stories, some pre-published in other anthologies, some brand spanking new.Andrew Lennon is a talented up and coming writer, I've read quiet a few of his works so far and have been very impressed.Twisted Shorts would be another wonderful place to sample this authors works. A lot of those stories are still vivid in my mind and I read them many months ago! This go round, he introduces his lovely daughter Georgia, only 14...WOW, that young gal has got a great way with words. PLUS, a dark poem included. Never been one for poetry, they're just so deep and hurt me head a little but this was beautiful and disturbing. Not every story in this affected me or lingered in my psyche to be shaken off violently and clumsily, a few of them felt rushed or lacked depth which, I know, can be difficult to capture in a short story. The imagination and creativity is there and I think all of them were original and interesting but I just felt a few of them need fleshing out a bit more.I shall attempt to briefly sum up the lot of them. Bear with me, I'll try not to ramble, much. There are 12 though so, coffee helps.Bite ~ Aaron is a bit arrogant, never been very popular or liked at all really, in part due to his fanatical prepper ways but who's laughing now, well...just him, he's pretty much the only one left.Through his stockpiled zombie apocalyptic hoarding ways he is thoroughly prepared, mapping out the future and gearing up for a new passion project...or so he thinks. Karma and Darwin have a way of trippin and flippin them scales.Apartment 2b ~ A butcher who fancies a bit of taxiderming on the side. So many things could crop up when this disgruntled and fed up hubby catches the wifey doing a little of her own free time leisurely activity. Hmmm wonder how he could incorporate them skills of his in order to get his point etched securely across...Killing Christmas ~ Jeff is sick to death of Christmas and it's only the beginning of November, why the hell everybody gots be so joyfully jubilant and decking their halls so damn early in the season. Well, his day is about to get way more festive and yuletided up. I am kind of a Grinch too, I can't stand Christmas music and loathe the fact that it saturates us so early. I like presents though.Hunger ~ Driven insane from starvation and isolation, we get a glimpse inside this delusional man's mind. He can't even remember his name or how long it's been since being trapped and seemingly forgotten about. Even the rats won't come near him anymore. Somethings gotta give cause he's nothing left to offer, he's been depleted.Silent Scream ~ A camping trip for 4 casual friends, Mark just wants to get lucky with the beautiful yet debilitatingly ditsy Melody, Debbie's a bit cranky and horny herself, and Keith just wants to chill. A different kind of action is in store for theses friends, one that will leave them speechless.Meet Victor ~ Sarah tease shames her friend Chloe into venturing inside the abandoned and super icky aaand highly rumored haunted house. Chloe is not a wimp or fraidy cat!! Actually, she kind of is but ain't gonna let Sarah know that. Well, Chloe not only faced her fears but she made a new friend as well.Twins ~ I've always found carbon copy twins creepy as hell anyway, even when they don't dress alike or finish each others sentences. These girls do all that and amp that creep factor up to a whole new level. They enjoy their games a little too interactive and unconsented.Lake ~ forbidden love, old school prejudices, a sneak away get together that goes in a totally different and dark direction for our forlorn and wayward lovers.Bad Day ~ Walter is running late for work, a client meeting with his jerk of a boss. The commute to work is not supposed to be this combative. Now his growing increasingly belligerent boss won't stop calling every 2 minutes, he's got rage ragers on his tail, has to pee, plus it's pouring out.....hope the meeting all goes well, if he gets there.Dolls with Human Hair ~ Childbirth can change many a woman but hopefully not to the point where you turn into an empty shell of your former self. PPD taken to the dire straits and what's a poor concerned hubby to do...well, take care of his girls to the best of his rationale, of course.Tomorrow Night ~ The poem; so ominous, yet lovely and mesmerizing.I Am the Monster in the Dark ~ An ambiguous and unsettling tale with chilling symbolism about a young person still living at home and still descending further into the shadows of madness.Excited to see what else Mr. Lennon has lurking around his dark and dank corridors. Looking forward to another novella actually. Keith and A Life Wasted were fantastic. He's super at the shorts but I want a meatier cut from him, served bloody rare, of course. A few of the above would have been great in novella form actually, like Silent Scream and Bad Day, craved more density with those two for sure. And that Georgia, again ~ WOW (... 14 !?!?...when I was 14, I'm pretty sure I was still writing those check YES or NO notes in class and folding them into star patterns ...), I just hope she gets the confidence and encouragement she needs from her father and others to continue on. She definitely has an abundance of powerful natural raw skill. And come on now, how cute is this....a different form of the daddy daughter dance.I sure hope she doesn't get mad at that comment, teenagers huh!? We are introduced to Aaron who had always been a bit of an unsocial butterfly but when the poop hits the fan in real life, his nerdiness pays off. This short was funny and entertaining while also having just enough spookiness to be a Lennon. Yay!Apartment 2B was an excellent short to re-read from Behind Closed Doors which was an instant favorite of mine. Ryan and his wife have marital issues but I wouldn’t have guessed how far this story would go in sort of solving them. Shock value in this short is off the charts.Killing Christmas is another one I have already read, but it’s a treat to read again. Jeff is a bit of a scrooge, but who could blame him when Halloween just passed? Christmas is getting crammed down his throat 2 months early with television specials, cards from almost strangers and shops. Finally, bombarded with ‘Merry Christmases’ from strangers, Jeff is ready to crack. The horrible and wonderful finale comes when Jeff is late for work and must face his boss…Silent Scream is an epic short about a group of four who are on a camping trip. There is sexual tension, old friends, new friends, and possible romance on the agenda, but mother nature has different plans.Meet Victor was somehow heartwarming while also being creepy good. Little Chloe is dared to enter a house by her so-called friend. Chloe takes on the dare and throws it right back at her friend after meeting Victor and things will never be the same for any of these children.Twins is one of the creepiest tales ever. I used to be intrigued and interested in all the things twins claim to do, such as psychic bonds, but now I’m just letting them be and keeping my interest aimed at reading about twins. These two girls are a match for any psychopath, no spoilers, you have to read!Bad Day was a short many of us could relate to; stuck in traffic, situations that are out of our control, and mean bosses. One of those days where nothing goes right, then you realize it’s still only morning-UGH! Read this short for some anger release without ruining your own day.Dolls with human hair is my first time reading Georgia Lennon. I was pleased with the outcome, the writing is poetic yet very down to earth at the same time. This particular tale was quite sad and disturbed, so it was very entertaining.Tomorrow night was my pick for favorite from the entire collection. I ended up highlighting almost the entire thing. This author knows how to make you feel many different emotions and is very easy to relate to. Being a behavioral science major, I found this entry most entertaining and disturbing.I am the monster in the dark was so beautifully descriptive that I almost forgot which genre I was reading. Once again this has very relatable parts such as anxiety issues, being tired, restless nights, and of course FEAR!I am excited to have been able to get a peek at Georgia’s work and to have been reminded of Andrew’s talents as well. I definitely recommend this to all fans of modern horror and can’t wait to read more by both authors! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Spellbinding tales of the supernatural By R T Twinem I have only recently been introduced to the work of Andrew Lennon having read and enjoyed immensely Twisted Shorts. I was therefore hoping that A Taste of Fear would produce some of the same frightening and macabre tales to while away a few restless hours and create some sleepless nights. These are chilling stories from the mind of a very original author which entrap you from the first page and refuse to let you go. The pace is unrelenting and the imagery although at times explicit, and possibly disturbing, is also highly enjoyable and essential to the execution of these finely crafted tales.A collection of short horror stories is an unusual and difficult exercise for an author to achieve. The action must be immediate, the stories not over complex but exciting enough to thrill and shock. My own particular favourites were; Apartment 2B where a taxidermist introduces his loving wife Emma to his part time butchery; Killing Christmas where our hero Jeff bemoans the excesses of the xmas stampede "It's only the beginning of November!" He shouted. "Shut the hell up"; Bad Day where Walter is having the day from hell, entombed in motorway traffic and running dangerously late for a meeting with his boss Brendan....something has to give"With such unforgettable phrases as "The maggots of fear within me squirm to the surface yet cannot gnaw their way out" and a final brilliant sentence "I do not have schizophrenia. I am the monster in the dark"....I highly commend both the mind and the intellectual writing ability of this emerging author. See all 4 customer reviews...
About the Author Andrew Lennon is the author of A Life to Waste, Keith and Twisted Shorts. He has featured in numerous anthologies and is successfully becoming a recognised name in horror and thriller writing. Andrew is a happily married man living in the North West of England with his wife Hazel & their children. Andrew grew up in Ormskirk, which is a small market town. During his school years he enjoyed writing stories. These were kept locked away at home because he did not have the confidence to show the outside world. Having always been a big horror fan, Andrew spent a lot of his time watching scary movies or playing scary games, but it wasn’t until his mid-twenties that he developed a taste for reading. His wife, also being a big horror fan, had a very large Stephen King collection which Andrew began to consume. Once hooked into reading horror, he started to discover new authors like Thomas Ligotti & Ryan C Thomas. It was while reading work from these authors that he decided to try writing something himself and there came the idea for “A Life to Waste” He enjoys spending his time with his family and watching or reading new horror.
