22gigantes.com - "“I didn’t believe in prayer at the beginning of that summer, I believed in action,” Julie writes. This was the start of a three-month experiment that took her from the boardrooms of corporate America to various hospital rooms, where she discovered how to minister to the families of patients, the sick, and the dying. The Hospital Clinical Pastoral Education Program enabled her to create a learning contract that focused on prayer. Julie recorded numerous vivid and sometimes heartbreaking stories of how prayer can transform those in its path, especially Julie. Her prayers are direct and sometimes challenging, but an answer is always provided, and most of the time, it is unexpected. Have an inside look into the life of a chaplain, and see what it’s like when a surgeon asks for prayers in an emergency room trauma unit. Find out how Julie talks with a five-year-old who just discovered she is paralyzed from the neck down and how she answers an eight-year-old’s question, “Are there dinosaurs in heaven?” Each patient’s story helps develop the importance of being present to those who are suffering. It also shows how being present in these situations can also bring up our own suffering. The one constant in each story is the healing power of prayer."

A shocking book, a beautiful book, and a loving book By John Ghertner The humanity expressed in this little book goes beyond what I had expected to experience. Each of the author's vignettes represents a real experience and similar to ones which I personally experienced many times as a medical student and physician trying to cope with the tragedies of life. The death of a child experienced by a 22 year old medical student with no one there but me to hold the shaking body of dumbstruck parents, the fatal car crash destroying the fabric of a family with only me to hold the hand of who remained, the slow destructive power of lung cancer witnessed by a 9 year old daughter. These are stories of my life brought back to my reality by this remarkable book. This is a shocking book, a beautiful book, and a loving book. You will cry as you read this, as I did, and you will learn at least a little bit about living. And I can only pray that the author will bless us with a more in depth discussion of this important subject: how to live when others cannot. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What a wonderful book! In this brief volume By Alan Wylds What a wonderful book! In this brief volume, Julie Cicora shares her experiences from her summer of Clinical Pastoral Education, as she moves from someone who is very skeptical about prayer to a person who believes prayer is an essential response to the craziness and frustration of life. The author shares her personal journey in a very honest, straightforward way. She doesn't "preach" (in the conventional use of the word) and doesn't try to force the reader to any specific conclusions. Instead, she lets her stories speak for themselves. In doing so, she invites you in as a companion on her journey -- and you can't help but be moved. This book would make an excellent choice for a church book group. It could be used as springboard for discussions on prayer: what is prayer? Does prayer "work"? What are different types of prayer? But the text also could be the backdrop for discussions about our individual faith journeys: what events formed (are still forming) our understanding of God and God's role in our lives. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not to be missed By Michael P. Spencer Julie has written a moving and revealing memoir of her experiences providing spiritual support in a hospital setting, in which the gift of prayer becomes more fully revealed. This book is funny, honest, and accessible to anyone wanting to know more about how prayer shapes believing, and for anyone wondering what Clinical Pastoral Education is all about. I happen to know Julie somewhat as a colleague in the church, and this book reads like Julie is: authentic, friendly, open, and faithful. See all 22 customer reviews...
