A Wonderful Amish Christmas Carol By j. mahoney This Illustrated Amish Christmas Carol by Ruth Price is a unique Amish version of Dickens 'A Christmas Carol'. As with the original story it is about a man name Hezekiah Geizhals who is being literally haunted by has past life through encounters with ghosts who are four unique Second Christmas visitors. One of the visitors is a ghost named Marley like in the Dickens story. Marley is a long departed business associate who warns him to change his ways. Now an old man, Geizhals realizes he has spent an empty life where he devoted his life to accumulating wealth and allienating his relatives, and realizes that he faces a terrible afterlife like Marley. The other ghosts represent Christmas past, present and future.Geizhals has a girl who works is stables named Hannah Yoder who in this story is like a cross between Bob Cratchet and Tiny Tim. Later in the story Hannah is attempts to save one of Gerizals' horses from being slaughtered by taking him away. I don't want to give away the story here but readers will not be disappointed by the ending and will even feel uplifted by it. With wonderful illustration this is a great story to add to your Christmas collection. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Amish Christmas Carol - A Little bit of Everything! By Pebbles When I saw Ruth Price had written another book, and that it was an adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, I had to get it, and I'm so glad I did! This was so well done. I give Ruth credit for managing to keep the tone and themes of the original Christmas Carol while still telling her own story. Hannah and Ezekiel were so cute, and the illustrations made it even more sweet! I think my favorite though was The Ghost of Christmas Past. Really haunting picture. Loved this book! Great combination of old with new. I just hope there's a print version soon so I can give it to a couple of my friends as gifts. :) 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Christmas story with a modern twist. By Slim Sallee An Illustrated Amish Christmas Carol is a wonderfully crafted story based upon a Christmas classic. Like Scrooge, Hezekiah lost his humanity and spirituality in the pursuit of worldly gain. His story of revelation and redemption, told in an Amish setting, is creative and unique.Dickens highlighted the dichotomy between rich and poor in Victorian England. Author Ruth Price updates that theme by showing how greed harms animals that have outlived their "usefulness" to their human owners. Like Dickens' poor, abandoned animals are a huge problem in our country that no one wants to acknowledge. Hopefully, Price's Amish Christmas Carol will motivate her readers to become involved in solving this problem.I highly recommend An Illustrated Amish Christmas Carol. See all 23 customer reviews...
