But had a bit of trouble with the juxtaposition of talent and foolishness within any given character. Nice Lord of the Flies touch, however.Wish the bike stuff was more realistic. Premise is feasible, but needs some modernization of facts and terminology. Kind of reminded me of that book where the guy pushes his cart from Texas to Montana after an emp because a bike dealer said riding would be too difficult...for the author maybe.Yellowstone is a great plot vehicle. Loads of unknowns and it can be spun for terror and entertainment. But as one who lived through St. Helens ash fall, a few hours without a real facemask in the dust clouds the author wrote of would prove near fatal.Started book two. Didn't have the intriguing bite of book one. Might try again later. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Once burned...twice shy. By Rich This series is like potato chips - can't stop until the bag is empty. I liked the story line and the plot but each book was on the short side (Episode #1 144 pages; Episode #2 90+ pages and Episode #3 is 115 pages). Basically, one good story (haven't finished #3 yet) for 3x what I expected to pay. Good marketing I suppose. Once burned...twice shy. Next time I will look at the page count before I press the buy button. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good read By claudette valliere Pretty good read. Spoiler alert. This one starts with the Chinese drilling under the ocean. They are making tunnels so they can get the man made islands in the China Sea.A sub is detected on radar. That sub the USS Utah, an American nuclear powered sub, is there to spy on just what the Chinese are up to.Dr. Zhang the head Chinese scientist is told by his military head man to shut the drilling down. Zhang tells him it will take time to shut it down. You just can't flip the switch because there will be consequences. The military leader, in contact with his superior, flips that switch and literally destroys the world. So begins one pretty good read. This one has Commander Jackson Cisco, the XO of the Utah, Captain Ulrech, COB Daniels, the crews, a Utah that receives order to stay in the ocean and circle, a Utah that follows orders until they are about to run out of food, a Captain who heads topside once the sub surfaces, a Captain who just as quickly comes back down covered in dust, Jack and his Captain try to figure out just what has happened while they have been under the seas, a trip North where they find a forty foot boat with a Japanese man on board, a man who tells them the giant caldera that is Yellowstone erupted, this caused tsunami's that swamped the coasts of the US, removed Florida, air that is full of pumice, dust inches to feet deep all over everything, a Captain who finally docs the Utah in San Diego, a Utah that is damaged because they have no tugs to safely put her in her birth, Jack and his Captain who find a marine, the only survivor of a fierce fight at the communications building, a Captain who tells the crew they can leave because there is no more United States or navy, a Jack who decides a bike will be a good way to get to Texas so he can look for his ex wife and daughters, a Jack who's a graduate of Annapolis, a Jack that had rudimentary gun training, a Jack who takes lessons from Daniels and learns about his weapons and how to use them, a Jack who outfits himself with an M-4, body armor, ammo, water and food in a world where nothing will grown, a Jack who gets that bike he needs, a group called the Eagles based at a high school, another group at a church, a Jack who helps the church group fight off the Eagles who want what the Church group has, some of the Utah crew who will stay with the Captain in San Diego, others like Jack who will be looking for family and Jack Cisco doing his best to get to Texas, survive and stay alive.
