By sangria Well, Ive read some reviews, and I'm feeling a bit out of place and wondering what I missed. I really didn't care for this book, which is a shame because I absolutely LOVED Magnate. Lizzie is one of my all time favorite h'. (You get a bit of that couple in here, so I would tell you to read that one first if you haven't already done so.) Soooo.......Its with great disappointment I didn't like Ava very much. I'm not sure what I wanted for Will after the Ass he was to Emmitt but, I just really felt she had way to much going on. The hurdle of being poor just seemed to of been enough, but the author just kept pouring on problems for her to the point I was exhausted and not feeling much of the romance at all anymore, especially from her side, and also feeling a bit bad for Will. I honestly never thought Id say that, if you go back and read Magnate youll understand that, lol. I did however like the way she cleaned up his prior relationships, and found Kathleen quite endearing instead of being written as some ugly in spirit high society miss. Perhaps we shall see her in the future, as well as a few hints this author left at the end of the book for characters. On the other hand, as one of my favorite books of all time is Lions and Lace, I'm thrilled to find an author that's actually writing Gilded Age romances, and it is well written, no doubt, and researched well, no doubt. Also although I wasn't sold on the romance, I did enjoy Cabots part of this story, it did also have a clever ending to tie up all the things I was wondering about.I'm quite looking forward to his book as well. I loved the tease at the end, and I enjoy second chance love books, so I'm really looking forward to it. This is a great author, I wont be giving up on her anytime soon, this one just didn't make my heart race, but I'm sure many of you will like it. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Series By M. Rondeau I read the first book in Joanna Shupe’s Knickerbocker Club series and it was so good, I simply had to continue on. In Book #2 BARON William Sloan is the workaholic railroad baron of the Northeast Railway system. A railway system he inherited from his father who had no faith in William and thought of him strictly as a loser. Well this spurred William to prove to himself that he was no loser, if fact having built his railroad to extreme heights he was even ready to enter politics. Unfortunately, the man he’d chosen as his running mate seemed to be walking a fine edge where his association with a supposedly gifted psychic just might ruin all chances should the public discover the reliance his running mate had placed upon her advice.Ava Jones has managed to survive and support her three younger siblings in the only way she could by posing as the Russian Madame Zolikoff. Naturally, she knew she was a con artist but thought of herself mainly as an entertainer and this is exactly what she did - entertained. She didn’t feel that she was hurting the people who came to her and she was providing that small bit off entertainment. Unfortunately, Bill Sloan, wanted her out of his running mates life, but the more he sparred and threatened her, he realized he wanted her in his life… and his bed! And that was just the beginning!Ms.Shupe’s writing kept me glued to this tome and one of my highest praises is that her writing made it very difficult to lay down. Her character development involved letting the reader see and feel motivations that kept both William and Ava so real and fluid. As the author played this story out she brings even more and more characters into play making BARON a truly exceptional and interesting read as she enlightens the reader with some of the fascinating historical events of the Gilded Age period of New York and the people who influenced and helped shape our nation.Bottom line: I am loving this series and BARON featuring William and Ava is one one more reason I fully intend to continue reading all the books in The Knickerbocker Club.Marilyn Rondeau 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good Story, Hero I Had to Tolerate Until I Liked Him By Sheila M FINAL DECISION: I liked the quirky heroine who is strong willed-independent and a survivor. She completely upends the ordered life of the hero who is a bit of a difficult character to like at first. Ultimately, I liked their romance but it was a bit of a trial for me to get there.THE STORY: The heir to old money William Sloane is a railroad baron who has decided to run for state government. In order to protect his running mate, however, he has to cut the tie his running mate has with a medium Madam Zolikoff who William knows is a fraud. When William approaches Madam Zolikoff, he finds Ava Jones (who works under the pseudonym). Ava is working as a medium in order to support her orphaned siblings. William is reluctantly intrigued by the spirited Ava even as he knows that he has to marry a woman of his own class; Ava is wary of William after having been burned by a man before.OPINION: I thought this novel had a new story to tell because of its setting and time. The characters and situation felt fresh even as the cross-class story of a rich aristocratic man and lower class woman is familiar. These characters and their situation was new.Ava was my favorite in the book. She is so strong and determined. A woman who has carried a heavy burden of caring for her family, she has done well for herself. She knows she is skirting the edge of wrongdoing with her medium act, but she tries to be the most honest she can. I loved her relationship with her siblings and her fears and desperation when it comes for being responsible for them. I felt for her after her abandonment by her lover and understood her stances as she tries to balance her desires with her fears and her responsibilities. Will was a more difficult character for me to like. He was a jerk in the last book and he doesn't start out much better here (actually, he might be worse). Self-righteous, entitled, self-indulgent, he looks down on Ava from the start. As the story continues, I began to have, if not sympathy, then understanding of his actions. By the end of the book, I felt he had changed enough to be worthy of Ava, but the time it took to get there diminished my interest in the book somewhat.WORTH MENTIONING: This book has some fascinating history about the prevalence of spiritual mediums at the time and takes place amidst the corruption of Tammany Hall.CONNECTED BOOKS: BARON is the second book in the Knickerbocker Club series. It can be read as a standalone although I recommend reading book 1 first just to learn more about the characters.STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars. See all 58 customer reviews...
