When two Marlowes (the evil British family that is the arch-enemies of the Tinkers) show up at the Tinker House (a magical house that the Tinkers live in) with a message – Surrender or die. At the end of August, we are coming. – the Tinker family realize that they are out-numbered. They do the only thing that they can think of – go to the magical communities to ask for help. The team of Tinkers taken to see the communities are shocked – the leprechauns’ shillelaghs are useless sticks, and their rainbows are gray; the vampires are all tired and wimpy and lazy; the witches’ and wizards’ wands are just twigs, and they couldn’t make a potion to save their lives (which explains why they can’t save themselves) – all of their magic is gone! The Marlowes are stealing it!Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny is the third book in the series. The third book in the series was great! Ms. Haberman knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat! This book is full of action and adventure! I loved the plot (and character) development in the book. It really revealed a lot about the characters. I think that Ms. Haberman has gotten into the minds of her characters really easy and realistically. The vampire section was pretty funny, as were using a “vicious” magical hugging plant as a “torture/interrogation” base. I do think that this book got a bit dark and somewhat depressing at times (especially the ending). At times I got “angry” at Chase for being so arrogant and stubborn, when if he had thought it through, he would’ve realized something (can’t tell you what ). I think this also shows how talented Ms. Haberman is as a writer and really getting the reader involved in the story and how well she gets into her characters’ minds. I can’t wait for book 4! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. CHASE TINKER Book 3 -- a super exciting rush! By Kathy Cunningham Book Three in Malia Ann Haberman’s CHASE TINKER series is another wildly exciting installment in a magical, whimsical adventure for middle-grade readers. HOUSE OF DESTINY picks up a few months after the conclusion of HOUSE OF SECRETS, with almost-fourteen-year-old Chase Tinker fighting feelings of guilt over the death of his cousin Janie. He knows Janie brought it all on herself by trying to kill his brother Andy, but that doesn’t make him feel much better. To make matters worse, Chase has failed math and has to attend summer school if he hopes to enter 9th grade in the fall. But summer school will certainly get in the way of his continuing efforts to fight the insidious Marlowe family, the “wicked, heartless beings [who are] determined to steal all the magic and free will in the world.” When fifteen-year-old Alex Marlowe shows up asking for sanctuary from the Tinkers, Chase is immediately suspicious. Even after his father and grandfather seem to believe Alex’s story that he wants nothing to do with the evil Marlowe family, Chase can’t bring himself to trust Alex. So when the Marlowes plot to take over the Tinkers’ magical house and get their hands on the mystical Relic, Chase must fight back. But is Alex really on his side, or is he a mole for the rotten Marlowes? While Haberman makes an effort in this novel to clue new readers in to what’s happening, it really makes sense to read the previous two novels first. This is a series, much like the HARRY POTTER books are a series, and starting with Book Three means you’re missing a bunch of the story. Chase and his family are magical humans who have dedicated their lives to preserving the marvelous Relic from which all the magic in the world emanates. The Marlowes have managed to steal a Shard of the Relic, but it’s not enough for them – they want control of all of it. And in HOUSE OF DESTINY we see a bit of what the magical world has become as a result of the Marlowes’ evil. But to really understand Chase’s relationship with his father, his crush on friend Persephone, his self-doubts about his worthiness to be the next Keeper of the House, and his non-stop dedication to fighting the Marlowes, you really need to read HOUSE OF MAGIC and HOUSE OF SECRETS. That’s not a bad thing – if you haven’t read them yet, you’re in for a real treat! And HOUSE OF DESTINY is every bit as fabulous as the first two books were. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel actually happens fairly early on, when Nori (Chase’s long-lost cousin, discovered in the second book) manages to decipher the strange writing on the Relic. She claims the writing refers to the destinies of the Tinker family members, but she refuses to reveal those destinies. This is infuriating to Chase, of course, but Nori’s argument (that it’s not a good thing to know too much about your own destiny) certainly makes sense. After all, if you know what’s going to happen, do you really have free will? Or does the prophecy itself become self-fulfilling? So throughout the story, Nori’s knowledge (and Chase’s frustration) is there in the background, unspoken but looming all the same. Also exciting is the Tinker family’s fascinating “road-trip” to visit a variety of other magical beings – Haberman takes us into the worlds of fairies, leprechauns, vampires, and witches as Chase and his friends seek help in their war with the Marlowes. And then there’s the ending – well, let’s just say the last few chapters of this novel are a super exciting rush!HOUSE OF DESTINY is a fast-paced adventure story with enough twists and turns to satisfy any young reader. Chase is a wonderful character – he’s brave and selfless, but he’s also a pretty ordinary teenager who makes mistakes, overreacts, and can’t always trust his own judgment. Persephone is a valiant partner for him – she is no “damsel in distress,” looking for a boy to get her out of trouble. She’s just as courageous and capable as Chase is, and she can get into almost as much trouble. They also make a sweet couple, although their romance (which has been hinted at since the first book) hasn’t quite materialized yet. He clearly likes her, but she might have her eye on someone else. I have no doubt they’ll end up together (you can’t fight destiny, right?), but Haberman is content to let things develop slowly. These are still kids after all, and it’s nice to read a story in which kids really do act like kids.I totally recommend the CHASE TINKER series – start with HOUSE OF MAGIC and you won’t be able to stop until you’ve finished HOUSE OF DESTINY. And even then you’ll be wanting more, since this particular installment ends with a pretty gripping cliff-hanger. I’ll admit that such endings can be annoying, but Haberman is quite adept at wrapping up enough of the story to keep her readers from going stark raving mad between books. It’s tough with this one, though, and I know I’ll be keeping my eye out for the final volume, CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF MIST. Write quickly, Ms. Haberman! This book has a great cast and they work well together By Kriston Johnson Oh Chase…what have you gotten yourself into this time? This installment in the Chase Tinker series brings us even more twists and turns than we’ve seen before. In the beginning Chase is plagued with the loss of someone very near to him and the hidden truth of the event has been eating him alive for months. It is not long until truths are revealed, and unfortunately for Chase things spiral out of his control from there. This book has a great cast and they work well together. They are the perfect blend snark and fun but always willing to be there for one another. I like the character development we see while Chase deals with all of the obstacles thrown his way.One thing I really like about this book is the magical world has expanded beyond Chase’s world as we knew it. We get to travel to other realms and are introduced to the other magical beings. It is really neat to see other magical communities and how they relate to the magical world as a whole. The House of Destiny is book three in a four book series. I could only imagine how hard it would be to write and plot an entire series. But I can tell you that Malia Ann Haberman has done a bang up job. This individual book moves along at a good pace, and the so far the series itself has been paced perfectly. With each book the stakes are raised and the ending keeps me wanting more.I really look forward the reading the conclusion to this whimsical series. I recommend the read for boys and girls of all ages.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. See all 5 customer reviews...
