By Danny Mc I enjoyed the second book in this series as much as the first.Additional secrets revealed about this special house kept me turning the pages with excitement. And even more, I enjoyed learning about the background (and secrets) of the characters - especially those on the 'dark' side.I loved the addition of Nori, and I look forward to reading more. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable series! By This Kid s Books Chase Tinker is BACK! In the first Chase Tinker book, “Chase Tinker and the House of Magic,” Chase finds out that he and his brother have magical powers that they get when they turn 10 & ½. Chase also finds out about a magical house that is the headquarters of the Tinker Family. He later finds out about an evil family called the Marlowes that try to enslave the human race and steal the Tinker magic. In Book 2, Chase and his family is now living at the legendary Tinker House. Chase thinks he and his family have a pretty good life. His dad is back, and Chase is kind of angry with him, because his dad didn’t tell Chase and his younger brother Andy about the magical abilities of the Tinker family. Chase’s cousin, Janie (also living at the Tinker house) is very angry because her mom died trying to save Chase’s dad from the Marlowes. No one knows how to help her so they kind of leave her alone. When the Marlowes kidnap Janie, the Tinkers realize they will do ANYTHING to get her back! With help from their long-lost cousin Nori and friend Persephone, Chase, Andy and their dad believe they can rescue Janie – if they can find her, that is!I was very happy to read this book because the first of Ms. Haberman’s Chase Tinker books was written so well and it was exciting. The second book was just as good, if not better! There are many twists and turns in the plot, but it is a clearly written story that is fun to read and easy to follow. I love the Tinker magic described in the book. I was happy to learn more about it in the second book. I love Nori’s power – she can absorb knowledge from books (without doing things to damage the book) without reading it. The twist at the end of the book was totally unexpected and really made it a great ending. The book is a clean read and great for middle grade readers. Chase is a good main character. Ms. Haberman makes him a believable kid (only with magical powers). The reader can understand how he feels about who he is. I like Andy the best, though. He’s always hungry.*NOTE* I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. CHASE TINKER Book 2 -- absolutely wonderful! By Kathy Cunningham Malia Ann Haberman’s CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF SECRETS is a wonderful sequel to her earlier HOUSE OF MAGIC. The series focuses on 13-year-old Chase Tinker, who discovered in the first book that he is a member of a very special magical family. Chase’s father, Benjamin, attempted to deny his magical heritage, and he kept the truth from Chase (and from Chase’s younger brother, Andy). But magic will out, and both boys discovered their special abilities when they turned ten and a half. The first book, HOUSE OF MAGIC, told the story of Chase’s adventures in his grandfather’s fabulous magical house, his search for his kidnapped father, and his first encounters with the Tinker family enemies, the Marlowes. HOUSE OF SECRETS picks up right where HOUSE OF MAGIC left off – Chase is wrestling with anger over what he sees as his father’s betrayal (and his grandfather’s, as well), he’s still crushing on cute Persephone Periwinkle, and he’s trying to help his cousin Janie, whose mother Clair was killed by the Marlowes. On top of all that, a mysterious “magical flu” seems to have infected Chase, and very strange things happen every time he sneezes. When the Marlowes manage to invade the House of Magic and take Janie away with them, Chase is determined to rescue her, no matter what the cost. And the cost may be great. This is a rich and powerful story, equally full of humor and thrills. Chase and his brother are real kids who snipe at each other like boys their age will do – although it’s always clear they are totally devoted to each other. Persephone is smart and gorgeous and perfectly able to take care of herself; although she’s not magical herself, she wears a special necklace given to her by Chase’s grandfather which enables her to use magic along with the Tinkers. There’s also a new character introduced in HOUSE OF SECRETS, Nori, a long-lost cousin Chase never knew he had. Together Chase, Andy, Persephone, and Nori work with Chase’s reluctant father to battle the Marlowes and rescue Janie. What they discover is a secret no one but Chase’s grandfather even suspected – a secret that just might get all of them killed.Ultimately, this is a novel about secrets. There are many, many secrets swirling around the various plot developments, and some of them may be deadly. Haberman is asking her readers to consider the implications of secrets, and whether it’s ever right to keep things from people you love. In the first book (HOUSE OF MAGIC), Chase’s father kept many things from him, including his magical heritage, as well as the fate of his sister, Chase’s Aunt Clair. These are things that make it difficult for Chase to truly trust his father in HOUSE OF SECRETS. But was Benjamin right in hiding the truth to protect his family? This is something Chase must come to terms with. Early in HOUSE OF SECRETS, Chase’s grandfather tells him, “There’s nothing wrong with having secrets. . . . You only have to know when it’s best to hold onto them, or best to let go.” These are things all of the characters in this book will struggle with before the novel’s conclusion. This is without a doubt a marvelous series for middle grade readers. As with the first installment, there is no inappropriate language or sexual content (Chase and Persephone are on the verge of a possible romance, but they’re very young and they behave as very young teens would). There is violence in this novel, but it’s never graphic and it’s always appropriate for the age of the readers and for the story being told. Haberman is presenting mature and complex themes in this series (including issues of anger, guilt, and jealously), but she’s doing it in ways that are totally accessible for children. I do recommend that readers check out the first novel, HOUSE OF MAGIC, before delving into HOUSE OF SECRETS. There’s so much information in that book about the magical house, the Tinker family, and the relationships between the characters, that it would be a shame to miss it. While Haberman makes a concerted effort in HOUSE OF SECRETS to remind her readers of developments and information from the first book, this is such a fabulous series that it makes sense for readers to begin at the beginning. Great series, great second installment – I highly recommend it.[Please note: I was provided a copy of this book for review; the opinions expressed here are my own.] See all 7 customer reviews...
