And when you have fun, you can do amazing things." - Joe NamathTHE BENEFITS OF REWARDING YOUR SUCCESSES Congratulations! You've managed to accomplish a goal! You've done something successfully to improve your life, and you are feeling great about your achievement. So, what do you do to encourage this successful feeling and keep yourself motivated to reach for even more success in your life? One of the best ways to encourage yourself to keep setting goals, large or small, is to give yourself a reward when you complete your goal successfully. Rewarding yourself might sound vain or selfish, but it's actually a proven way to help keep yourself motivated to become more successful. Since you now know that confidence is directly linked to success, you need to realize that anything which encourages you to succeed further will also encourage your confidence to grow even more. Award winning author Gretchin Rubin talks about how giving yourself a reward is something that everyone usually does without realizing (Rubin, 2014). It's time you start acknowledging the facts that you do give yourself rewards, you deserve a reward for your success, and rewards are useful for helping you accomplish more, and build your confidence even more. WHAT IS A SELF REWARD? Usually when we hear about rewards we imagine those momentary pleasures like an extra piece of dessert after dinner, a new item we have been craving, or any other treat that is either a bit costly or else not associated with our normal, healthy behavior. This does not have to be the case, as your reward can be anything at all that you enjoy. If you find that you enjoy watching videos on YouTube, taking a walk, talking on the phone with your friends, cleaning, fresh scents, or literally anything else, you can use that as your reward. Rewards that you give yourself should be anything that you find enjoyable. If you already do something that you love every day you can acknowledge that you love it and consider it a reward for your daily goal oriented behaviors. You can also choose a few small things that you can easily do for yourself when you accomplish one of your daily goals, your weekly goals, and your long term goals. When you're choosing how to reward yourself, you should keep in mind that self rewards ought to be: Equal to the Success It doesn't make sense to give yourself a huge reward for a very small success. While it feels awesome to accomplish a smaller daily goal such as studying a new language for 15 minutes every day for one week, you should not reward yourself with an excessive reward, such as buying a new TV or taking a vacation. Each reward you give yourself should be equal to the success that you have achieved. Larger rewards should be reserved for the accomplishment of larger goals, while smaller, everyday rewards can be given to yourself when you accomplish your daily action oriented goals. Easy to Attain You should not have to struggle to give yourself a reward. Ideally your reward should provide almost instantaneous gratification. The work has been done already and accomplished, so it doesn't make sense for you to work even more to get your reward! You have already earned it by accomplishing your goal. Choose a reward that is quick and easy to give yourself. Healthy for You While goals should be something you enjoy, it may not be appropriate or helpful to choose a daily reward that is not healthy. If you reward yourself with extra helpings of dessert every day, your health may start to suffer as you continue to give yourself that reward. Instead, try finding rewards that you enjoy which are also healthy or neutral. This may include taking a short walk on a nice day, cooking a healthy dinner, drinking your favorite brand of tea or coffee, making fresh fruit smoothies, reading for half an hour, or anything else that will benefit you rather than having any negative impact. Not Detrimental to Your Goals Whatever you do, never reward yourself with anything that will affect your ability to accomplish your goals! If you are trying to build confidence, don't reward yourself with activities that will hinder your confidence building. When you want to lose weight, don't reward yourself with a week off of your exercise and diet plan. Every action you do will have some effect on your eventual successes, so make sure you are not putting yourself further away from your goals by rewarding yourself!
