A Cinematic Experience By Ann Massey (Perth, Australia) Reading "Dark Ice" was like watching a blockbuster action flick. The friendship between the hard boiled PI with a soft centre and his hell raising ex army buddy was reminiscent of buddy bonding in American movies where two polar opposites are brought together as partners. The spectacular scenery, and the fast and furious action was as awe-inspiring as viewing it in 3D on the silver screen. The ending as satisfactory with the good guys bringing the perpetrator to justice. Dark Ice was a cinematic experience. The only thing missing was the popcorn. Bring on the sequel. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tall, dark, and very handsome--a great read By Kind, Jovial, Decisive If you enjoy gritty, fast-paced crime, you can't go wrong with Dan Reno (pronounced Renault). He's tough. He's witty, and he always gets his man. No, he's not a Mountie, he's a private detective working out of Lake Tahoe, on the border between Nevada and California. It’s a stunning backdrop, but more of that later...In this episode, which takes place in a snowy midwinter, he's hunting the killer of two beautiful blonde women, and he also runs up against two rival motorcycle gangs. What Dan doesn't know is whether the cases are linked. As well as the murders and the biker gangs, there is a drugs connection, seedy nightclubs, and a dirty cop who might be at the centre of it all.Stanton’s writing is crisp, clean, and first rate. The cases are interesting and appear tough to crack, there’s a real police procedural feel to the investigations. But above everything is the landscape. Superbly realised by a writer of great skill, it forms a backdrop to the action, and becomes one of the main characters of the novel. The human characters are well drawn, especially Dan and his best mate, Cody, and there’s a love interest, too. And to prove he’s note a complete Neanderthal, Dan has a new addition to his household in the shape of a fluffy kitten—although he still calls his significant other ‘Doll’ in a throwback to the noir 1950s gumshoes, Sam Spade and Philip Marlow. If you like action, criminal investigation, and a noir style, you’ll love this novel. In fact, what's not to like?I whistled through this book in a couple of days. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dave Stanton is 4 for 4! Great book. By beckettbeckettbeckett Started and finished Dark Ice yesterday. Having read the previous 3 Dan Reno adventures, was excited to get the email the latest good was for sale on Kindle. Had not planned on reading the book in one day, yet kept reading last night long after I would normally go to sleep.Really enjoy Dave Stanton's work, and recommend it to others like myself that enjoy mystery or detective stories. As with the previous efforts from Stanton, you don't see it coming when you find out "who dun it". See all 33 customer reviews...
