Those Frustrating Knots By FrankG Disentangling Genius, by Gill Scott - Unraveling the seven knots of frustration so you can align your desire with creative expression.Ok, I write a blog called Leaders Bookshelf right. So, the obvious question for me might be, "Is Disentangling Genius a leadership book". I have two answers for that.First. I truly believe that for one to be an effective leader of others, he must first be able to effectively lead himself. Leading oneself (or you could say raising one's lid) requires a healthy, or at least an "in-check" inner peace. An untangled view of the world. That said, Disentangling Genius is most definitely a leadership book. If a leader carries around the baggage of his past and is driven by limiting beliefs, how can he influence others to new heights? I think he may be able to for a while, but eventually the truth comes out and leadership effectiveness wanes.Second, for the Leaders Bookshelf to be true to leaders, it must necessarily include books related to self-help or personal development. I believe that Disentangling Genius is all about the process of personal development. So there you have it... Disentangling Genius now has a home on The Leaders Bookshelf.I actually met the author Gill (like Jill) Scott this past summer at a conference in Ohio. I had an opportunity to pick up her book at that time but for some reason I didn't. If you listened to TLB episode #007 you'll probably know why. And just for the record Disentangling Genius makes TWO in a row for me! See, I told you I was getting better. At any rate, I sat at the same table with Gill and her friend Julie. I was captivated by their accents. They are both from the UK. I have always been a fan of the British accent. I caught myself reading her book with a British accent several times. Crazy! The book...Disentangling Genius, for me was about the process of untangling the past. Resolving what was, so you can move forward without all of that old baggage. The process of unloading those limiting beliefs was a key takeaway for me.Gill refers to that baggage as knots. She walks through seven of them, describing what they are, how they got balled up and how to straighten them out.It seems so obvious after reading it. Remember when you were a child and you got a knot in your shoelace? What did you do? If you were like me, you probably had a tantrum and pulled at the knot in an effort to get it undone so you could get the shoe off. Did that EVER work? No, it didn't. Even today, knots frustrate me. I don't typically have a tantrum these days, not typically, but they happen. Age and wisdom have taught me, and you, that when you have a stubborn knot, you must lean into it, get closer, work through the process of "disentangling" it patiently. This is a metaphor for Gill's seven knots. Each one could have been a roadblock, and many were for a period of time. The trick is to turn your roadblock into speed bumps and then into stepping-stones.Gill masterfully walks the reader through these seven knots. In the end she presents us with seven colorful strands. Each represents a victory. Then she talks us through a process of forming those strands into stronger cords. We are all familiar with the saying that refers to a cord of three strands being difficult to break. Well, this is the same concept. We learn to take those things that were a hindrance, problems that had halted our progress and turn them into a lifeline. And finally, she encourages us to combine all seven into "one core". This core, as I understand it is a declaration of victory. It is a representation of what we have gone through and how we came out on the other side. It was difficult. But what worthwhile endeavor is not difficult? We as leaders have to be honest with ourselves. Are there knots in our lives that need disentangling? Yes, probably. Then they must be dealt with if we want to raise our leadership lid.I recommend that you grab a copy of Disentangling Genius by Gill Scott. Work your way through the pages of beautifully crafted wisdom. See where they take you. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Break free from being entangled by life's challenges By Jeannie Schmidt On the way to helping people become disentangled, Gill engages the reader with personal and insightful stories. Connecting the reader to the stories, she leads them on a path of self-discovery leading to healing. I like that each chapter stands on its own, so you can read it sequentially or just hit the chapters that hit home for you. The questions at the end of the chapter helped me do self-checks and dig deep to become disentangled. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
