By KayLovesToRead Emergency Baby by Alison RobertHarlequin Medical Romance # 273 - Oct 2006Specialist Emergency Response Team - Book 1Losing her mother when she was very young, Samantha Moore grew up feeling she needed to achieve beyond her father's expectations, especially having three older brothers to compete with for attention. Training for and joining the exclusive SERT (Specialist Emergency Response Team), had given Sam the sense of accomplishment and challenge she needed. But something was shifting in Sam, and her partner Alex Henry was worried. After delivering a difficult birth, Sam suddenly feels her biological clock ticking. Not one for long-term relationships, she decides she needs to find a sperm donor, and wonders if Alex would be willing to help. Alex is appalled at first, but then slowly he considers the options. He's been attracted to Sam since she joined the team and became his partner, but for the sake of the team never pursued it. Now he can have his fling with Sam and help her get the baby she wants. As long as he's not expected to commit to a future, he's good to go. Only it doesn't take long for Alex to want to end his bachelor ways, and it's Sam that digs her heels in and doesn't want permanent.I love the opening to this book; Sam's got herself stuck in a cave tunnel during a rescue and must wriggle her way out. This opening sets the tone for the entire book. The rescues performed by SERT are dangerous and tension filled, and Sam and Alex meet the challenge head on without hesitation. I gained further admiration for the young men and women who make up the Emergency Response teams in reading this book.Alex is a bit of a playboy and an adrenalin junkie. He loves his job; all the dangers and the rescues give him a natural high. I found him a little immature at first, until he started to want to be a father and not just a sperm donor. He grew wonderfully. Sam had a lot of hang-ups from growing up the youngest of a motherless brood and the only female. Her fear of long-term relationships was actually stronger than Alex's. But as their relationship becomes more intimate, Sam can't deny how wonderful it is having Alex there by her side.I know this review isn't quite up to par; the words I'm searching for just aren't there today, so this one is longer than most reviews I write. My apologies to Ms. Roberts if I haven't done justice; I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's fast paced, the chemistry between Alex and Sam grows to a sizzling heat, and their HEA is one well earned 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
