I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. The fourth book in the Dreams and Reality series, Explosive Dreams by Hadena James may be the best book in this series so far (although they have all been excellent, I have to admit that I’ve read this book 5 times since I received a copy). While continuing to develop the SCT Unit and solve cases, Ms. James reminds us about the central focus of the series; Aislinn Cain, an a-typical sociopath struggling with her issues of humanity while capturing serial killers and trying to get closer to her family. Bringing the action much closer to home, this installment takes place in the Mid-West where Ms. James turns a popular summer escape into a serial killer’s dream. It’s not every day that a woman receives a gift from a secret admirer, but once again Aislinn “Ace” Cain, personal magnet of the criminally insane, has attracted a new “fan”. A fan who sends gifts that have to be quarantined. As if dealing with that, and the fall out of receiving a present full of “The Plague” isn't enough, Ace and her team find themselves saddled with a case which places them all in danger and leaves Ace questioning if she has what it takes to get the job done.As Ms. James continues to develop the relationships among the members of the SCT Unit, it becomes pretty evident that this installment in her series will be different. While the dialogue is still snappy and Ace continues to be quirky, sarcastic and loveable in her own way, things are shaping up to be a little bit darker. The team is somewhat out of their element and being forced to work with the FBI in a more open manner while dealing with a bomber who doesn’t really fit the “serial killer” mold Ace has become used to.Ace and the team are also being forced to take more “down” time between cases, and Ace’s family has decided to make themselves at home when she’s there. This is something new for Ace to deal with as previously she was away at school or working and she rarely saw her family. In a way this tests Ace’s “humanity” or lack thereof, and makes her question her place in society even more.Once again bringing Malachi Blake into the story, Ms. James gives us a view of the special, strange and potentially dangerous relationship existing between these two characters. It also makes me wonder if they’ll find themselves enemies at some point in the future. A showdown that I have no doubt Ace would win, though the mental and emotional cost would be tremendously high. Will Ace and her team be able to solve who’s destroying everyone’s summer? Will the loss her team suffers spell the end of the SCT Unit or will they be able to recover? You’ll have to read Explosive Dreams to find out. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book in the series, Plagued Dreams, where it looks like Ace will finally get to check out “The Plague” up close and personal. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. explosive is correct By Amazon Reader If you haven't read the first books in this series, you will want to in order to gain an understanding of all the players. In the latest installment of the Aislinn Cain books, we have the first one that i find fault with. The ending. It's not a cliffhanger, but i wanted more. Of course the story will continue but i wasn't ready for this one to be over, it was so good. There are a lot of emotions included in this one because the Marshals lose one of their own. There is a mass murderer in the form of a bomber and there is a serial killer in the form of a sniper. We see more emotion from Aislinn in this book than any of the others. It's good to know that even a sociopath can cry. As will all the Dreams & Reality books, there is so much information related to the killers. Hadena does an awesome job of researching before she writes and i feel like i am getting history lessons along with a great story. If you love mystery, you'll love these books. Now, i have to wait somewhat impatiently for the next one. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Feelings can slip in even in a sociopath. By T.Vogt, 'Kindle Addict' The dedicated team and it's resident sociopath, functional but still a sociopath personality, have recovered from the baking of Death Valley and are onto another case. Of course Aislinn's 'Don't care' attitude can only stretch so far before she snaps back. This case is no different, or is it. She is laid up with family, and begins to open to her for safety's sake kept at a distance family. She then is back on the case and makes some real insights as to where will be hit next, she just isn't ready for the body count to include those she has allowed into her defensive screens. The loss of a team member during a downtime lull hits the whole team hard, Hadena James shows a crack in Aislinn's don't care except kill before they kill you attitude, her feelings slip in slightly, new emotions and feelings, while they may have assigned a replacement but will he be a fit? The mourning begins and rebuilding the team begins as the story comes to it's conclusion. One of the serials were tracking has exacted his revenge for another taking his lime light, and someday the team will find him, they all understand that. Will she continue to open or close back up in the next book. See all 29 customer reviews...
About the Author I’ve been writing for over two decades and before that, I was creating my own bedtime stories to tell myself. I penned my first short story at the ripe old age of 8. It was a fable about how the raccoon got its eye-mask and was roughly three pages of handwritten, 8 year old scrawl. My mother still has it and occasionally, I still dig it out and admire it. When I got my first computer, I took all my handwritten stories and typed them in. Afterwards, I tossed the originals. In my early twenties, I had a bit of a writer’s meltdown and deleted everything. So, with the exception of the story about the raccoon, I actually have none of my writings from before I was 23. Which is sad, because I had a half dozen other novels and well over two hundred short stories. It has all been offered up to the computer and writing gods as a sacrifice and show of humility or some such nonsense that makes me feel less like an idiot about it. I have been offered contracts with publishing houses in the past and always turned them down. Now that I have experimented with being an Indie Author, I really like it and I’m really glad I turned them down. However, if you had asked me this in the early years of 2000, I would have told you that I was an idiot (and it was a huge contributing factor to my deleting all my work). When I’m not writing, I play in a steel-tip dart league and enjoy going to dart tournaments. I enjoy renaissance festivals and sanitized pirates who sing sea shanties. My appetite for reading is ferocious and I consume two to three books a week as well as writing my own. Aside from introducing me to darts, my SO has introduced me to camping, which I, surprisingly, enjoy. We can often be found in the summer at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri, where his parents own a campground. I am a native of Columbia, Missouri, which I will probably call home for the rest of my life, but I love to travel. Day trips, week trips, vacations on other continents, wherever the path takes me is where I want to be and I’m hoping to be able to travel more in the future. http://www.facebook.com/hadenajames hadenajames.wordpress.com @hadenajames Newsletter
