The plot is a mash-up of Pride and Prejudice with Mary Shelley's classic Regency story Frankenstein. The name of our hero becomes Frankenstein Fitzwilliam Darcy here. I have to admit that reading his first name as "Frank" just doesn't seem right, but you'll have to accept it if you choose to plunge into the depths of this intriguing book. The senior Mr. Darcy was driven to explore the mysteries of the human body surgically and had several deep secrets when he died, some of which his son discovers shortly after his death and others that he only learns over the course of this book. Many of Pemberley's servants are physically disfigured in some way, having had grievous injuries that Mr. Darcy was able to treat successfully, none more than Mr. Greenwood. This gentle giant, a mute, is now the younger Mr. Darcy's assistant after having been his father's valet. Young Mr. Darcy is also a doctor, but his area of interest lies more in using herbs and diet to treat illness.Aside from a significant and revealing prologue, this follows the basic story framework of P&P. Elizabeth Bennet overhears the conversation at the Meryton assembly where haughty Mr Darcy disparages her looks within her earshot. Generally, subsequent events follow in the same order with the addition of murders and attempted murders and mysteries to be uncovered. The best variation is in Lydia's story and the way her behavior changes after her fateful encounter with Mr. Wickham. However, the story doesn't conclude until after Darcy and Elizabeth are married, as other secrets are yet to be revealed and more danger must be averted. There is romance here, but that is not this author's strong suit. As I noted in my review of her previous book, even though she tells a whopping good story, her writing doesn't tend to engage the reader's emotions. Scenes where characters are in peril don't provoke an anxious response, and scenes that should feel romantic just don't. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are correct, so no complaints there.Just as in another of Ms. Grix's books, Stealing Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Variation, I give her props for writing a wildly creative story and pulling it off nicely. How she manages to color way outside the lines and yet stay within the familiar bounds of P&P canon is truly impressive. This one is a perfect story with Halloween around the corner! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Doctor Frankenstein Fitzwilliam Darcy By Kindle Customer This mashup of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is a perfect blend of both. This Dr. Darcy is more thoughtful and less haughty than others I have read and is perfectly in keeping with the storyline. The story generally follows Canon, but there are enough twists and turns too surprise the most "seasoned" FanFiction reader. The new characters are delightful, the old ones perfectly in character, and the happy outcome is a story worthy of being read at Halloween or any time of the year.I highly recommend. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Fascinating By J. A. GRACE Don't think I've ever read a Pride and Prejudice fan-fiction quite like this one. I've read where there were zombies, vampires and, even wolves, but never Frankenstein. Very appealing and original. Frankenstein Darcy is full of the usual suspects, the Darcys, Bennets, Bingleys, De Bourgs and, of course Wickham etc...I don't want to give anything away, suffice it to say, but this Darcy will have you guessing from day one, is he or isn't he?I truly enjoyed this intriguing and, fresh new take on the Jane Austen classic. What readers are saying about Frankenstein Darcy:"Delightful. What a fun twist on Pride and Prejudice.""I love this version of Darcy.""I was surprised by how much I liked this.""A masterful blend of Shelley and Austen.""The secrets of Pemberley prove hair raising for Elizabeth Bennet as Mr. Darcy takes responsibility for the sins of his father and George Wickham. A wonderfully perfect mashup of Mary Shelley and Jane Austen to keep you up reading all night!" - April Floyd, author of Spells Spoken Lightly: Pride and Prejudice and Witches From the Author Some of my friends ask me where I get so many Pride and Prejudice ideas. I don't know. I've been analyzing and writing stories since I was eight. I've been reading Jane Austen since I was twelve, and although sometimes I fear that the creative well will dry up, it hasn't happened yet. My usual problem is having too many story ideas, not having too little. The idea for Frankenstein Darcy came from thinking up new titles. I like to have Darcy or Pemberley in my titles so readers instantly know what they're getting: Oh,look, it's another Darcy story. Sometimes I come up with titles before the plot premise. One day, I thought Pemberley Permutations would be a tongue twister and probably too difficult to read on a book cover. Then it hit me - the ultimate Pemberley Permutation would be if Darcy was Frankenstein.I laughed; it was such a strange, unexpected combination. Then I thought - can I make this work? I had read some of the original Frankenstein in high school, and I'd seen some of the movies, but I'm not a horror fan. I like suspense, but I don't like blood and guts. For the next few months, I immersed myself in Frankenstein culture and voila Frankenstein Darcy was born -created.An excerpt from Frankenstein Darcy:Miss Bennet let her breath out in a hiss and flinched with pain. Her beautiful eyes opened.Thank God, Darcy prayed."Mr. Darcy?" she said in confusion. "My head hurts."She tried to sit up, but he pressed on her shoulder to keep her horizontal. "Shh, Miss Bennet," he said calmly. "You have fallen and hit your head. You need rest. Lie still.""Where am I?""At Netherfield."She was confused. "I don't remember. Did I come to see Jane?"That would explain her presence. "I think so," Darcy said. "But now you will be a patient as well." He turned to Bingley and his sister. "She is going to need to lie down for at least a day or two, possibly more. Can you put her up in a room next to her sister?""Yes, of course," Bingley said. "Whatever she needs."But Miss Bingley who was beginning to be alarmed by an invasion of Bennets, said, "Wouldn't she be better at Longbourn with her own family?""No," Darcy said firmly."I must keep her under observation for two days and she should not be moved. Even simple head injuries can be fatal."Elizabeth frowned."Are you a doctor, Mr. Darcy?""Yes."She closed her eyes wearily. "You have an appalling bedside manner. Go away." From the Inside Flap Frankenstein Darcy. Who says you can't make the perfect man?
