22gigantes.com - Adventuring is a costly affair, and while the tolls are often paid in blood, gold can drain away just as quickly. The party’s trek out of Solium and across the lands of Alcatham has left them with only a handful of gold between them. Fortunately, they have drawn near Camnarael, Alcatham’s capital, where all manner of quests--and rewards--await. But all is not as expected in the capital. Unusual occurrences have been happening throughout Camnarael: figures in the shadows making unsavory bargains, attackers harassing innocent parishioners, and adventurers from all over the land gathering to partake in a Grand Quest offered by the royal family. Most curious of all are the rumors that speak of a strange artifact serving as the reward for this rare and legendary quest... an artifact that sounds just a bit too familiar to the former NPCs.

Easily twice as good as book 2 was. I found myself near the end and found I still had over 20% more to read. The author did not cop out and rush the ending. It built on itself over and over taking different paths so I did not know what was coming next. I am getting 4 hours of sleep before work today. THAT is how good I found this book.If you have ever played dnd or some form of role-playing table top game, this novel is for you. This book, like the last two, has another module being played out by players and NPC's at the same time. However there is a time crunch and multiple quests being taken off the field by what players or npc's do.Any more would be ruining the story. I did not even flip to the back to read the last few pages halfway through cause I was never bored.Due yourself a favor and read this book! Can not wait for the fourth one. I would pre-order it now if I could. Good job Mr. Hayes! Thank you very much! Now to re-read books one and two! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Drew Hayes has another great read for lovers of fantasy and mystery. By Tom Ryle With his third installment in the Spells, Swords & Stealth series, Drew Hayes begins to draw back the curtain just a bit as to what is really going on, but still leaves myriad questions to be answered in future books. This is a fun and innovative fantasy set in the world of role-playing games, weaving a complicated relationship between the characters who live withing the game and the players who visit so much havoc on their world. It is clearly written for the gamers out there, but as someone who has almost no exposure to that world, I can confidently say that he does an excellent job of delving into the intricacies of such games while still presenting a story that non-gamers can fully follow and enjoy. As with his Super Powereds series, this read is both satisfies and leaves you looking forward to the next visit to his colorful and lively creation. May Grumble guide us all. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Makes me want to grab a character sheet and roll a D20 By Kindle Customer The gnome, half orc, mayor's daughter and inept guard from NPC's are now full-fleged adventurers in Going Rogue. The foursome who had once wondered what could possibly make people take up questing, fighting monsters and plundering dungeons come to realize that the answer is obvious... for the money. Along with their friend, Timuscor and his magically conjured pig Mr. Peppers, they enter Camnarael, the capital of the kingdom of Alcatham, looking to resupply but with purses light on gold. Fortunately, the city is the central hub for all of the kingdom's quests, and there are any number of jobs that an industrious group of adventures can perform for cash. Unfortunately, an old enemy of the group knows this and has spies in the city on the lookout.Meanwhile in the real world, Game Master Russell tracks down the limited edition third module of Spells, Swords and Stealth. Convinced that the first two modules rewrote themselves as the games progressed, he and his gaming group can't wait to tear into this new adventure, particularly when they read of the central questing hub of Camnarael and the abundance of jobs that they can explore.Drew Hayes does a fantastic job of tying his game world and real world together, having his NPCs move around the city at the same time as the avatars of his gamers. One group takes a quest and the second group is upset because that quest is unavailable. The two groups pass each other in the street and almost recognize a design on a shield.Hayes is clearly both an avid gamer and a talented writer. He takes the D&D experience and twists it around, showing the lives and back stories of minor, extraneous characters every gamer has encountered while making the actual players themselves secondary to the story. We follow the clerks who hand out quests to a lunchroom and listen to their gossip, but we never even find out the last names of the players who are rolling the D20s affecting the world. It's a genius move that makes the story fresh. He ties the game world and the real world together so well that his villains, the callous gamers that roleplay with bloodlust and darkness, are truly reprehensible See all 134 customer reviews...
