By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader Grilling the Subject by Daryl Wood Gerber is the fifth book in A Cookbook Nook Mystery series. Jenna Hart and the town are getting ready for the Wild West Extravaganza that is coming to Crystal Cove. All the shops have decorated to reflect the wild west theme including Jenna’s The Cookbook Nook. Then Jenna finds out that the Shane Maverick is now running the WWE. They used to work together at Taylor and Squib Advertising in San Francisco. Shane is a type of guy that reminds you of a snake oil salesman (just what they do not need). Cary Hart, Jenna’s father and the other homeowners in the his neighborhood have been having difficulty with Sylvia Gump over some land. Sylvia is trying to take over other people’s property. Sylvia has taken to throwing loud parties (bands with electric guitars) and has even erected an ostentatious fountain (along with hedges and fences). Cary has a loud argument with Sylvia on the phone when she is setting up for another party. The next morning Sylvia is found dead by her fountain. Cary was out fishing at the time (by himself, of course) which means he has no alibi. Jenna will do whatever is necessary to clear her father off the suspect list (which considering Sylvia is quite long). Will Jenna be able to wrangle the real killer? Jenna has felt that someone is following her. She has only been able to see a shadowy figure. Who is it and why are the following her around town? Jenna is in for the shock of a lifetime when she discovers the individual’s true identity. Join Jenna as well as her family and friends for barbecue, iced tea, and other delectable delights in Grilling the Subject.Grilling the Subject is an entertaining novel. It has developed characters, a gorgeous setting in sunny California, and great descriptions of cookbooks. The book is easy to read and has a good pace. The book is 277 pages long and has some recipes from Katie, Jenna, and Bailey at the end (with their comments). I give Grilling the Subject 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). The mystery will lead you on a merry chase, but I thought it was easy to solve (I read a lot of mysteries and love solving them). I was surprised by the person who is following Jenna. It was a great twist. While this is the fifth book in the series, it can be read alone (the author gives the reader’s Jenna’s backstory to catch them up). I do, though, highly recommend you go and read the other four books when you get a chance (if you have not enjoyed them yet). I look forward to the next A Cookbook Nook Mystery (and any other books by Daryl Wood Gerber).I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and comments expressed above are strictly my own. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. her discovery that she has fallen in love four years after her husband’s death By Donna Townsend “Was I ticking people off?” Jenna Hart wonders. Well, actually, yes, she is. In her defense, she is frantically trying to clear her Dad, a suspect in the latest Crystal Cove murder. Between this week’s Wild West Extravaganza, the brutal murder, her discovery that she has fallen in love four years after her husband’s death, and one huge shocker, she throws herself into tracking down the real killer in true Jenna style. When we read a cozy, we are looking for characters we can relate to, folks we want to spend time with. It was good to revisit Aunt Vera, the queen of Tarot. She is warm and wise and quirky. Then there’s Bailey, Jenna’s best friend and coworker and bride-to-be. She’s a little distracted by her upcoming marriage to Tito, who grows on us through the series. Then there’s Dad and Lola and Katie and Rhett. So glad to see them again. The plot is clever; I figured it out two paragraphs before Jenna. Which is a good thing. I love the setting: where else can you find such establishments as the Latte Luck Café, Nuts and Bolts Hardware, Mums the Word Diner, or Beaders of Paradise? It was good to be back in Crystal Cove; I looked forward to my visit and was tickled to be there. This is a strong series with the characters maturing and the relationships evolving. I highly recommend this book which I received from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good friends, good food and good...murder? By Sarah 5th in the series. A rare 4 out of 5 stars for me, I really liked it.Cookbook Nook store owner Jenna Hart and all of Crystal Cove, CA are celebrating with a Wild West Extravaganza this time around, complete with rope jumping, trick riding, horse racing, lots of food and of course, a murder. When Jenna's dad is named a suspect, Jenna jumps in to clear him and find out who really killed the victim.I have really enjoyed this series. Jenna has grown a lot since the first book and has truly come into her own, running the store with her aunt, learning to cook (at least a little bit) and falling in love again. All the usual characters are well developed, likable and fun. Though it is the 5th in the series, the book stands on its own, with enough back story here and there to keep the new reader from being too in the dark.Grilling the Subject has plenty of suspects and a twisty little plot that will keep you enthralled all the way through. I also like that Jenna is a capable, quick thinking woman (even if she can't lie worth a darn, haha) who manages to take care of herself. My only complaint is that by the time I was done with the book I was hungry for all the yummy food described in the book! Conveniently, there are multiple recipes at the end for the reader to try.
