By LibbieHawker Hell's Fortress is a killer installation in the gripping RIGHTEOUS series. I ripped through the series (never expected to like a single thriller, let alone to get caught up in an entire series) and had a long wait for this new volume, but Hell's Fortress delivers!Outside of Blister Creek, the world is going to pot as the natural disaster that rocked the planet in Book 6 continues to make its effects felt. War erupts and the corrupt government tightens the screws on Blister Creek, who, as end-of-days believers, *had* set aside a nice stockpile of supplies to see their community through almost any disaster. However, things get desperate as their resources are torn from their hands, and many of the characters, especially Jacob, face tough moral dilemmas as the pressure builds. It's an extremely believable (and, in that respect, very scary) scenario -- it's unsettling to watch society fall apart, and to see good characters contemplate terrible decisions in an ultimate-survival setting. All the features you've come to know and love in Michael Wallace's writing are here in spades: excellent prose that never bogs down the tense plot, believable scenarios, and characters who feel real, familiar, and human. One of the things I love so much about the Righteous series is the strong female characters. So many books I've read in this genre and similar genres have cardboard-cutout women, whose most important feature seems to be their hotness and who are somehow capable of ridiculous feats of asskickery that no believable person could ever achieve. It gives the impression that women in thrillers are nothing more than Barbie dolls taped to ninja throwing stars. That's not the case with Wallace's characters. The women feel just as well-rounded as the men, but they still get to be action superstars in ways that don't clash with their personalities, their past experiences, or their philosophies. All the women in the series are wonderful, but Eliza has always been my favorite, and in Hell's Fortress she really gets a chance to be a true heroine. (Not that she hasn't done it before. We all remember THE ICEBERG LETTUCE.)All in all, this was a great read. Fans of the series will stand up and cheer, and we'll all be holding our breath until the final book drops in January. (Meanwhile, I'm going to read the entire series over again...)*I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hell's Fortress... fantastic book, amazing series! (from an avowed series-hater) By Lauren I was thrilled to get my hands on this book (OK, technically it's on my Kindle...) the 7th (and next-to-last) in the “Righteous” series, by Michael Wallace, having read all of the others... each one making me wish that the next in the series would be released IMMEDIATELY! While it wasn't quite that quickly, the wait is always worth it with these books. (I'm not normally a 'series' reader, in fact I usually grumble about them, not liking to have to keep buying another book to find out what happens, but this series grabbed my interest right from the start, and I became hopelessly addicted...)Michael Wallace has a fantastic writing style, which keeps you absorbed from beginning to end, with just the right balance of suspense, drama, detail, character development, and an ongoing story that brings together a wide assortment of personalities, forced to deal with almost unthinkable (but so very possible) realities... In this case, a group of LDS fundamentalists (polygamy included), reluctantly led by Dr. Jacob Christianson, hunkered down in their valley in the desert, prepared to wait out the end of civilization and their long-awaited salvation and eternal reward. But things don't always go quite as smoothly as they hope, and they are forced to face some problems they didn't plan for... like the USDA confiscating the grains and other resources they have set aside to feed their families in the last days, squatters threatening their water supply, drones keeping tabs on their every move, even invaders coming at them with heavy-duty military weapons. And in the midst of all the chaos around them, Jacob's sister Eliza decides she has to leave the valley to go looking for her beloved, Steve Krantz, who is “out there” somewhere in the chaos and war-zone-like USA.The inter-weaved story-lines make this an exciting and engrossing read, and the by-now familiar and loved characters make you hope for the best for all of them... even in their bleak circumstances. The struggles and decisions that Jacob is facing are beyond difficult – nearly impossible, but he and his extended family are determined to survive whatever comes next...Fantastic book, and once again, I can't wait for the next one! (Fortunately, it looks like the wait won't be too long this time, with the next book scheduled for release in January – Yay!) I highly recommend this entire series – even for those who, like me, aren't so crazy about series! This one is well worth the investment! With this series (and several other fantastic titles), Michael Wallace has become one of my favorite authors. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The End of Days By High Desert Homestead Hell's Fortress is the 7th book in the Righteous series by Michael Wallace. I jumped into this series starting with book 6, so I don't have all the background. That being said, the book covers enough back story that you can get a feel for what is going on, but it's not a stand alone book. While it's listed under Christian books, I think it's important to note that there is a good bit of swearing in it. There are a couple of romantic scenes that are a little heated, but not overly graphic. Given that this book is an end of the world type of book, there is a lot of violence. The main male character - Jacob - annoys me as he is not a strong leader and he constantly doubts himself and his faith when he is supposed to be The Prophet. (The story centers around a town of polygamist Mormons and how their town and group is handling the end of days.) The end of the story has him completely doing a 360 on something that he said he wouldn't do. That being said, the character is well written as I obviously had a good feel for who he was which caused me to dislike him.The main characters all have the own unique stories which add an interesting dynamic to the group. The plot felt too cliche in some parts while some parts were interesting. Some of the characters had some real inner conflicts as they tried to decide how they should handle the circumstances in which they found themselves. The story held my attention enough that I wanted to finish it as I was invested in some of the characters. Unfortunately, the ending is making me hesitate on wanting to read more in the series.
