22gigantes.com - As a teacher of writing and Women’s Studies, I have spent many years studying the lives and works of women writers. I Am Subject: Sharing our Truths to Reclaim Our Selves is a memoir that combines my own history with the words and experiences of other writers to examine the issues that perplex contemporary women. This work conveys women’s experiences by weaving together memoir, literary texts and criticism, and student reflection. Simply knowing that others have struggled can bring women out of isolated suffering to a deeper sense of awareness and understanding. Our early interpersonal relationships, combined with the societal and cultural messages we receive, influence all of our subsequent actions, including our sexual experiences, our intimate relationships, our decision to have children or not have children, our career choices, and our tendency to deal with life’s challenges either constructively or destructively. I Am Subject provides a safe space for women to increase their awareness regarding where they have come from and where they are going as they move forward into the next stages of their lives. It is my hope that those who read these words will sit with them, give thought to how they might apply to their own lives and the lives of women they know, and begin their own conversations regarding how to best turn increased awareness into action.

I am grateful that I have a convenient compilation of all the important lessons my classmates and I learned and experienced in her class. Now whenever I am feeling lost I can turn to this book (along with all of my saved notes) for a straight forward reminder, and strong encouragement. Although I graduated with my BA in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences from CU, and am now looking forward to obtaining my MA in the same field, Diane's Women Writers class was the most valuable me in my undergraduate career. I learned how to address and deal with some of my own demons in an effective way, and have since made it a habit to read and study the works of the women she introduced to us. Diane is one of the strongest and honest women I have ever met, and I am truly humbled by her personal story and experiences. That class along with this book should be a requirement for all of CU's students, and beyond. Well done! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. INCREDIBLY INSPIRING RECCOMEND TO ALL. By Amazon Customer I am a 21 year old girl currently in college and taking Professor DeBella's course. With a very recent tragic life event that I am still currently going through, this book and further, the author have been the first beacon of light in which I found the capability to overcome this recent adversity. The fact that I was able to read other student's stories (some very similar to my own) allowed me to acknowledge that I am not alone. Something that not only women, but all people are susceptible to feeling. Diane DeBella's own experiences alone and the adversities and struggles she has overcome throughout her life are proof enough that we all contain the strength to overcome any obstacle that faces us, as long as we have faith in ourselves and never cease to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would recommend this book to anyone struggling through depression, and am fully confident that any individual will be able to find inspiration within it. It is truly a book unlike any other, and I have the utmost respect for the author. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Powerful & riveting! A must-read for every woman. By Vbhat This book is powerful! It really gives incredible insight on women's collective struggles, and also inspires you to tell your own truth unapologetically. It's not just a personal memoir - by comparing her own journey with those of famous female authors and present-day women in her college class, she really makes you examine your own life and experiences. It's not a long book, but it's not a quick read -- I would have to stop after each chapter or 2 to really process my emotions (and sometimes to grab a tissue!)I really enjoyed reading about the lives of so many historical literary women (a few of whom were new to me), and then reading the students' personal responses, and seeing the connections between their struggles. The author herself is profoundly honest about her life, and I'm really thankful for her courage to write so openly about a lot of really tough subjects.I would encourage all women to read this book, as it's not only educational and insightful, it offers a real sense of healing and empowerment. I bought extra copies for my mom and sister! See all 44 customer reviews...
