22gigantes.com - I moved to Maine when I was 5. I lived there for two years while my father traveled the globe as a soldier in the Marine Corps. I returned when I was 10. I resented my parents for it. There was nothing great or even good about living in Brownville Jct. Friends lived an area code away, making it impossible to play outside or even talk on the phone. I spent my summers consumed in novels, reading about adventures elsewhere; anyplace but here. In 1996, Josh Decker introduced me to the radio, and this became my all-consuming escape from this nowhere. I would walk the streets until the sun went down, my Walkman in hand, playing recordings from the radio. I didn’t want to be there. After graduation, I got out. This is where some would say they left and never looked back. It’s a decade a later. I’m looking back. I’m looking at the world I was part of for a decade. When somebody asks me where I’m from, it’s without hesitation I reply, “I’m from Maine.” I find myself nostalgic for a world I loathed so much as a teenager. What is it drawing so many back? What about it molds the people so strongly its effects can are seen for life? What makes us Mainers? It is a prideful term we embrace and carry with us until the day we return to our hometowns. This is a journey to find my way back home.

Most helpful customer reviews 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. this book helped me feel like I was By christine cowing I read this book cover to cover within 3 hours. With having family in Maine and NOT being able to call myself a true "Mainer", this book helped me feel like I was. Even though I only remember visiting Maine twice in my life, I feel a connection to my family that I had never felt before. Although I was raised down south, I now have a link to a past that I would not have been able to feel without living there myself. I sat next to the author on the hood of his car looking deep into the stars. I was able to look out my window and see my family doing what any able human would do, giving unselfishly to help another human survive the cold harsh winters of Maine. I also felt the backlash of trying to find my identity in a small town. I felt the judgement, the support, and the fact that I would always be identified by my heritage regardless of how much I wanted to fight it. Oddly enough, I feel as though this author was telling my stories of discovering who I was as if he were experiencing them with me side by side. If anything, he helped me realize that the thing we run from the most is usually the one thing that our roots are embedded deep in and that it is okay to accept that this is what history wrote for me. I'd give anything to smell the crisp air of a night Maine. It's something that only a person whose roots run deep in Maine would understand. The crisp, clear air. The smell of pine wherever you went. The railroad bridges that crossed over the cold river that you couldn't seem to fight the urge to want to jump in. The small town that knew regardless of your opinion of someone, they were there for you. The author captured the snow globe that is Brownville Jct. The small town that is slowly disappearing from many people's lives holds a rich amount of history. If anything, this book gave me a connection to my past that I would not have found otherwise. I truly feel as though I can understand what it would have been like to grow up there. I wasn't able to and this was the next best thing. I truly feel as though this is as close as it gets to experiencing it myself. Thankfully, the author decided to courageously share his story and it has now reshaped mine. And, for that, I am eternally grateful. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Memories of youth, painted against the backdrop of a small, rural town in Maine By Amazon Customer The author of this book, magically takes you to moments in his youth painted against the backdrop of a small, rural town in Maine. Tenderly, and with a good bit of humor, he reflects on the past and how it has shaped his present. Perhaps it is when we look back that we understand ourselves better - I know I enjoyed the stories in this book and the memories of my own youth it triggered. While the author grew up in rural Maine, anyone who grew up in the 1980s & 1990s will relate to Jeremy Flagg's childhood memories and remember their own. I highly recommend this book - the collection of short essays is easy to get lost in. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "wicked" happy that I did By Amazon Customer Can't remember how I stumbled onto to Jeremy's work but, as they say in Maine, "wicked" happy that I did. Maine has some pretty cool authors and Jeremy is certainly one! Love the humor, cuz, if you grew up in Maine, there is plenty to laugh about, in retrospection ! Good job, Jeremy and thanks! My mother was determined to make a reader out of me. Shunning traditional literature at a young age, my mother placed X-Men Classic #69 in my lap and for the first time I was exposed to the phrases, "Mutants," "BAMF," and "SNIKT." From that moment on, I imagined my enrollment at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters at 1407 Graymalkin Lane.By middle school I was devouring fantasy and science fiction faster than I could check them out of the library. However, my first love remained comic books. I began writing my own comics with my best friend, and by the end of my eighth grade year, I had written over a hundred issues of the superhero series that would eventually become Children of Nostradamus. Meanwhile, I spent my Tuesday's at the grocery store, rummaging the racks, reading any comic put on the shelf.Working as a high school teacher provided me with an uncanny amount of great dialogue. The antics of teenagers in a suburban setting became the background of my first published book, Suburban Zombie High. Having started working at a second suburban school, the sequel, Suburban Zombie High: The Reunion was published.I became known as a geek before it was a trend. During college Jeremy would be shortened to Remy as friends discovered my goal of reading every X-Men comic. Being able to explain the many relationships of Scott Summers and his multi-dimensional children became a badge of honor. It wasn't until 2006 that I participated in my first NaNoWriMo writing an epic science fiction novel. Later I would use the opportunity to write Suburban Zombie High and my first draft of Children of Nostradamus. I also belong the New England Horror Writer's Association where I'm known as the sarcastic zombie author. I also partake in a weekly writing group called the Metrowest Writers where people are flabbergasted by my love of comics and scifi.
