A very pretty mess By Drown Hollum Joyride looks totally promising, with great artwork, fun designs, and peppy teens at the center of an initially interesting cast. Unfortunately all that promise crumbles away when you actually start to read it. The dialogue starts cute, devolving into disgustingly twee. The story begins with a great premise, devolving into a spastic inebriation of ideas. The characters start with unique voices and attitudes, only to be unveiled as painfully static and one-sided.It's an absolute bummer, and it becomes a boring challenge to get through these four issues. There are fundamental issues with Joyride, rooted deeply in the writing. The pacing is all over the place, and pov changes multiple times in each issue. This simple story becomes difficult to keep track of, due to nothing more than creative ineptitude. There was so much potential here, and I wanted to love Uma so bad, but I was sick of this book before it was even finished, and the ending was truly a sudden, flat moment of pat weakness, offering zero incentive to pick up the next volume. This is an easy skip, even though it's a very pretty book. See all 1 customer reviews...
