22gigantes.com - It's July in Moosetookalook, Maine, and Scottish Emporium proprietress Liss MacCrimmon Ruskin is prepping her wares for the annual Celtic heritage festival. But as a sinister crime wave washes over the quiet town, this year's celebration might prove a wee bit more eventful--and deadly--than tartan and bagpipes . . .When a fire ravages the local bookstore late one evening, Liss immediately fears the worst for owner Angie Hogencamp and the two young children who live above the shop. After the terrible blaze dies down, however, the family is nowhere to be found among the ruins. It's as if the three just vanished into smoke. Or even stranger--like they never existed at all. Disturbed by Angie's disappearance and suspecting arson, Liss counts on the weekend-long Western Maine Highland Games--complete with a parade and fireworks display--to offer a temporary distraction from the countless questions filling her head. But when the sound of a gunshot leads Liss to selectman Jason Graye's dead body on opening day, she's drawn into a full-blown homicide investigation like a moth to a flame. Is Moosetookalook suffering from a streak of bad luck, or are the two grim incidents connected? Unable to shake the notion that new victims are being targeted around town--and despite her worried husband's best protests--Liss races to nab the killer. And with her own life on the line, she'll need to act swiftly. Because when it comes to this kind of game, somebody has to lose . . . By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader Kilt at the Highland Games is the tenth book in A Liss MacCrimmon Mystery series. Liss MacCrimmon Ruskin is getting ready for the Western Maine Highland Games which are being held in Moosetookalook, Maine (what a mouthful) this year. Liss’ shop The Scottish Emporium will have a booth at the event. One evening Liss awakens and looks out the window. Angie’s Books is on fire. The emergency bells rings out calling for assistance from the volunteer fire fighters (Dan Ruskin, Liss’ husband is a member). Liss rushes over as well worried about her friend, Angie Hogencamp and her family. Angie is nowhere to be seen and neither are her two children, Beth and Bradley. It turns out that they are not in the burning building either. Where are the Hogencamp’s? Liss starts checking around town to see who saw Angie last. Liss thought she knew Angie very well, but everyone has secrets. The Western Maine Highland Games begin and Liss hopes this will distract her from her worry over Angie. But then town selectman, Jason Graye is found dead. Jason was not a well-liked man. He was trying to close the library to save the town money and Dolores Mayfield, town librarian, had declared war (want to guess who is a main suspect). Liss, of course, is drawn to the crime and cannot help but look into it (she just loves investigations). Liss is going to be busy tracking down Angie and her family as well as Jason’s killer. While Kilt at the Highland Games is the tenth book in the series, it can be a stand-alone novel. Kaitlyn Dunnett updates the readers on Liss and her history. The characters in the book are well developed and likeable (Aunt Peg is entertaining). I found the novel easy to read as are all of the book in this series. There is a wonderful description of Dan Ruskin’s puzzle tables in the book. Anyone that loves putting together puzzles will want one of these tables (I do)! The two mysteries in Kilt at the Highland Games are appealing and complex. I give Kilt at the Highland Games 4 out of 5 stars. Kilt at the Highland Games is told from more than one point-of-view which is a little confusing (it gets easier the further you get into the book). I have read every book in this series and have liked all of them. I will definitely read the next book in A Liss MacCrimmon Mystery series.I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest evaluation. The opinions and comments expressed are strictly my own. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fire, Missing Family, Highland Games & Murder! By Queenvon The air raid siren goes off at 3:35 am in Moosetookalook, Maine, signaling an emergency. Liz MacCrimmons Ruskin looks out the window to see Books by Angie engulfed in flames. Her own Scottish Emporium is also on the town square, as is the home she shares with husband Dan, an overweight Maine coon cat, Lumpkin & a long-haired black cat, Glenora. The volunteer firemen respond, but the clapboard building which also houses Angie Hogencamp's home, is fully engulfed. Despite searching, neither Angie nor her kids Beth & Bradley, are found in the building. So begins the 10th installment of this series. Liss, shopkeeper & amateur sleuth, sets out to locate Angie & family, as does the local police chief, Sherri Campbell, along with other friends & neighbors. Before long there are more pressing criminal matters for the cops to investigate, including a murder. As a result, Liss hires Jake Murdock, a pi she's used before, to try to locate the missing family. The Highland Games at the Ruskin's Spruces resort are scheduled to open a few days after the fire. Liss's aunt Margaret events coordinator at the resort, was instrumental in bringing the games to the Spruces & Liss has a stall for her shop there. Plenty of intrigue and action are packed into this novel. I read it in one go, it was just that good!A charming series, but it isn't necessary to have read the previous entries to enjoy Kilt at the Highland Games. The characters & their relationships are fairly well explained. Readers of this cozy mystery series will be pleased to see familiar faces and get more in depth background on some. The setting is the usually peaceful small town of Moosetookalook, Maine, and its environs. Another quick but satisfying read in a solid series. I recommend both Kilt at the Highland Games and the entire series to all cozy mystery readers. Thanks to the publisher, Kensington Books, as well as netgalley.com for providing me with the arc in exchange for my honest opinion & review. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Page Turner By RO G'ma Kilt at the Highland Games is the tenth book in Kaitlyn Dunnett’s Liss MacCrimmon Mystery series. This is the first book I’ve read in this series; however, the author provided great character background and I easily understood their backgrounds and relationships and didn’t feel lost jumping in this far into the series. Ms. Dunnett has written a well-plotted murder mystery with a cast of colorful, quirky, and fun characters. The story has enough twists, turns, and suspects to keep the reader involved. I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy a good murder mystery.Liss MacCrimmon Ruskin owns a gift shop, the Scottish Emporium, and lives with her husband, Dan, in the small village of Moosetookalook, Maine. Liss is excited and preparing for the annual Moosetookalook Highland Games that is being held at the Spruces when a sudden and unheard of crime wave hits the village. She is awakened early one morning and discovers that her friend, Angie Hogencamp’s, bookstore and apartment on fire. Officials determined the cause of the fire was arson and Liss is concerned for her friend because Angie and her two children have not been accounted for. Later, the post office is broken into and while on the way to the opening night firework display, Liss and Dan hear a gunshot. When they investigate, they find a door open at Jason Graye’s home and discover the selectman’s body on the floor. The local police chief, Sherri Campbell, has her hands full with the arson and murder, so Liss hires Jake Murdock, a private investigator, to try to locate the missing family. Liss can’t help but wonder if these events and an attack on a teen are somehow connected.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. See all 11 customer reviews...
