Though somewhat shy he is a humanitarian who sees the world in which we live as a community bonded in a natural approach to our feelings and ourselves and our interaction with others. His bisexual nature allows him to create well rounded characters – most all of his novels are M/M romances but they are much more than the usual erotica we encounter in film, television, and social media. Noah explores the boundaries of types and wields a strong brush as he paints his fascinating people.Noah opens this particularly fine new book with a solid setting of a young history student from University of Chicago – Simon – visiting the 91 year old Gene Fuller in his home. Simon offers, ‘I’m with the Illinois LGBT Historical Society. I’m doing interviews of elderly LGBT locals for our archive. I’d love to find out more about your service in World War Two and your later life. You’re quite a local figure— war hero, the owner of Chicago’s longest running gay nightclub—” “The Full Moon? Ah, that was a long time ago. Closed down because of the AIDS scare in 1985,” Gene said with that heaviness older gay men have when they talk about the Eighties. “I lost as many friends from that as I did in the war.” In this brief setting we discover the sensitivity of Noah Harris and reading on we discover a novel of particular importance. Of note, the congenial Gene requests that Simon remove his clothes and conduct the interview naked. ‘“I’ll look but I won’t touch,” Gene said. “But that’s the deal. No nudity, no interview.” Simon rolled his eyes. “You’re unbelievable.” “If you think that’s unbelievable, wait until you hear my war stories.”And from that superb opening Noah gets on to his story: ‘March 1945 American GI Gene Fuller has nearly died in a dozen horrible ways and has watched what happens to friends who aren’t so lucky. But now, in the war’s final weeks, he’s more scared than ever. Guarding a rear area, his regiment comes under attack by the Werewolves, a fanatical band of Nazi diehards who brutally slaughter any American who falls into their hands. Private Fuller has to rely on his wits, his lovers in the regiment, and a mysterious and handsome German prisoner Hans in order to survive. That may not be enough.’Noah offers the most erotic steamy bathhouse regimental group sexcapade and then the story plunges into the meat of it all – yes, an actual werewolf tale! Read it to believe the quality of writing – you’ll come away with memories of a camaraderie and love between the elderly and the young that deserves to be a film. Excellent on every level. I enjoy his style of writing and his storytelling. In Lone Wulf, he is at the top of his game. As one of the other reviewers mentions, I, too, am a history buff. I dislike books that take too much license with the facts so I was very interested in what Noah would do with this story. He didn't disappoint! The story is wrapped around the existence of the Undernehman Werwolf of the Nazi regime. Okay, so I said I didn't like an author taking too much license with the facts, but what Noah does in this story is amazing. I was enthralled by the main character, Gene Fuller. A couple of times I was surprised at turns in the story. As for Simon, he's a bit of a narcissistic exhibitionist but his character works as a perfect foil for Gene. All the action takes place in the Bavarian region of Germany towards the end of WWII. The German's are on the run and the leaders of the Third Reich know the war is lost. There last ditch efforts include the Werwulf, however, the construction and abilities of the Undernehman Werwolf as described in this book definitely occupy the realm of the paranormal. I had no issues suspending reality and losing myself in the story.I enjoyed the "band of brothers" setting of the men in Kranzberg. They were all individuals with unique personalities. The gay bathhouse of Kranzberg made perfect sense in this story and frankly, they probably existed just as Gene described it and for the reasons he described. The tone and dialogue was spot on for the 1940's. War is hell on Earth and this book does not shy away from those awful truths BUT they are not dwelt on to excess.Overall, I became immersed in this story and laughed my head off at Simon's reactions at the end. I could just see his eyes blown wide. You'll have to read it yourself to see what I found so amusing. You won't be disappointed. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. WWII Erotic Shifter Fantasy By Max Thomas Wow! A plot review can't do this one justice. A WWII tale of US soldiers in the waning days of the war is engaging. The characters are so real that I cared if one was hurt. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the war story, but it certainly seems close. The GI's encounter a German force hidden in the rear of the allied lines. One of the Germans surrenders, and our gay protagonist discovers that the prisoner is gay. The platoon soon learns that he has been turned into a werewolf by a Nazi doctor experimenting on concentration camp victims. The war story is told by the MC when he has survived and lived to a healthy old age.I especially enjoyed the present day banter of the old man reminiscing to the young gay interviewer. Their encounter ends with a nice twist. This tale is engaging, humorous, erotic, and very surprising. Action-packed, but still sweet. See all 69 customer reviews...
