By Amy B Dean As an active organization development (OD) practitioner, I've read a lot of books on the theory and practice of the trade. I especially appreciate Peter F. DiGiammarino's new book: Manage To Lead. He offers a refreshing blend of traditional management consulting and leadership development with specialized capabilities. This is rooted in DiGiammarino's lived experience. He isn't just a teacher, he also has active experience in the field. Digiammarino is able to think like a CEO armed with OD techniques. In Manage to Lead, DiGiammarino takes his change model for creating organization transformation and establishes a set of tools and models that allow his insights to be utilized in any environment. Instead of just providing airy ideas on a macro level, he describes those big ideas and then provides micro-level models to show how to best implement key strategic organizational decisions. These insights will be helpful for everyone from the CEOs of for-profit companies to CFOs of nonprofit organizations. This book will help you clearly sketch out the nature of the problem you are trying to solve. It will not give practitioners a roadmap to moving from their present position to a desired future state, but it will give them the tools to draw their own.Another useful aspect of DiGiammarino's book is his integration of leadership and managerial perspectives. Too often authors remain siloed within a strict focus on either leadership or management, as though these are wholly distinct categories. A leader who cannot manage may be able to get her organization started and inspire the troops, but may have trouble with institution building. Managers without leadership skills will struggle to sustain themselves without higher level support.DiGiammarino's work demonstrates that he clearly takes his commitment to help others seriously, and personally. He's certainly been an essential part of my development as an OD practitioner. Manage to Lead is a must read for any OD student, manager, or business leader.Amy B. Manage To Lead is a must read for leaders or all types around the world. By Thomas J. Kosnik This is an extraordinary book written by a talented leader who I have had the pleasure to watch lead teams to greatness. Peter D. has captured truths in a powerful way, and encourages us as readers to learn by doing, not just reading. This makes the book highly interactive, practical, and customizable to your unique leadership situation. So whether you are in a startup or a global company, for profit or non-profit, a current leader, consultant to leaders, or a student who aspires to lead some day, This book is a great source of tools, inspiration and pragmatic advice. It's also fun to read! Two thumbs up! Tom Kosnik 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Manage to Lead is Scratch for Leaders By Larry R DiGimmarino's Manage to Lead is what Scratch is for students. Scratch is a programming language and online community where students can create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. The programming language, targeted at 8-16 year olds, takes away all the chaotic syntax of programming and provides the platform for young people to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.Like Scratch, Manage to Lead provides leaders with frameworks and visuals to help business leaders ask the right questions, identify the most important goals and target optimal resources to solve organizational and business problems. The frameworks anchor the managers and leaders so s/he can be creative in meeting business challenges. This is a book that leaders will put on their bookshelf - not to collect dust, but to refer back to often. As s/he gains experience and the business situation evolves, Mr. DiGiammarino's frameworks can be nuanced for different business scenarios and maturation stages of the company. I recommend the book to entrepreneurs as well as managers who are leading large public companies. See all 24 customer reviews...
