22gigantes.com - She hadn’t seen it coming. Her new Chilean husband changed his mind, or, rather, the military coup changed it. Instead of their relocating to her native California as planned, he now wanted to give his country a chance. That was over four decades ago.Raised surrounded by the lush landscape of Marin County, Suzanne Adam hadn’t expected to settle in Santiago, a city of over five million people, where she faced a series of daunting challenges: food shortages, a military dictatorship, heartbroken parents, maids and machismo. After a visit back home, she returned to Chile with a California redwood seedling in her pocket, and together they would push down their roots into that distant soil, where she discovered the truth in Wallace Stegner’s statement: “Whatever landscape a child is exposed to early on, that will be the sort of gauze through which he or she will see the world afterwards.”

A Wonderful Life in Two Countries By Riverside Reader A memoir told with love of two countries, two families, and the author's eventual appreciation of both. The author vividly describes the pain of separation from parents and her California home, her difficulty with the subtleties of a foreign language, and the struggles to truly embrace the differences she encounters as she joins a large, warm family and raises two boys in a county unlike her own. People who have left the US to live in a foreign county or have been raised by immigrant parents or grandparents will especially appreciate the insight Suzanne's story provides. The book is well written, the memories honestly described and the journey with the author an enjoyable one. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it only enhanced the weave of Suzanne's beautiful writing. It was the details By Lucy Quinby Having our lives (Suzanne's and mine) intertwined for always, I could not wait to dive into Marrying Santiago. I could not put it down. Read it in two days. Knowing a lot of the history of Chile, a lot ofthe time period for this book, it only enhanced the weave of Suzanne's beautiful writing. It was the details, the smallest but important notices of life and living that grabbed me. I could be there. I also did not know some parts of the story which made it even richer and more special. This story beautifully tells of the tug between two cultures, two countries, two families and yet when all is said and done - ONE wonderful life full of love. I recommend it highly. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A sensitive and superb read.... By Kristina Aaronson Having known Suzanne when we were brides and young mothers in far away Santiago, Chile during difficult times in the Pinochet years I was eager to read her memoir. It did not disappoint. Suzanne is a superb writer with so much attention to detail. She is a poet with a deep sensitivity to nature and its impact on her personal and emotional well being Having been born in Chile and grown up in South America as the child of American parents, I have struggled with where my own roots lie. Suzanne's exploration of her dual life as an American in Chile raising a family and staying most of her life was fascinating to me. Her decision to leave her beloved Marin County knowing she was the only child and yet stay the course with a loving Chilean husband and raise her two boys took great courage and is truly inspirational to read. I have followed Suzanne Adam's development as a writer and an observer of life and I would highly recommend her memoir. See all 20 customer reviews...
