By SandraTWP When I first read the description of this book. I expected something along the lines of the old Sandra Bullock movie, The Net, which is about a woman who seclude herself at home, largely by working online and ordering all her needs that way. The only person with whole she maintains a relationship offline is her mother, who suffers from dementia. Whew Bullock's character's existence is erased online, she finds herself with no assets, no recourse.. And no one who can vouch for her.Not so.While Netopia includes many of these elements, albeit in different ways, it's an entirely different story. Here, we are shown a world where everyone is immersed - most of the time - in an online world. Even the offline world is constantly presented in an altered state to people whomped wife it through the filter of a virtual reality interface, with individuals regularly adding elements to or radically altering he reality of their surroundings. Here, in this false-front world, we get to see what happens when your entire life, from accessing banking through communicating with others, is run through an online interface...and then, one day, no one in that interface can recognize you. No one.I was somewhat torn over a particular characteristic of the books. On one hand, the story is intriguing, and I really wanted to find out what happens to the characters. On the other hand, the story paints a pretty unflattering portrait of human beings. While the story is clearly set in the future, there is a great deal of the story that is a direct reflection of how people in *current* times respond to consumerism and social media. The author offers some pretty thought provoking comments, story lines, and images. I found myself drawn to these passage and wanting to spend some time contemplating how these same (unflattering) tendencies of humanity manifest in current events... but the desire to reflect thoughtfully was in direct competition with my desire to know what happens to the characters. I suppose that just means that this is a book that may be best read more than once -- once for the story, and later for the social commentary.I received a copy of this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review. Any opinion expressed is mine alone. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. How a world where we could all share our thoughts directly with anyone else in the network would look like? How would a world th By Amazon Customer Margaret Atwood, one of my favorites sci-fi authors once said: “Every utopia - let's just stick with the literary ones - faces the same problem: What do you do with the people who don't fit in?”The book Netopia deals with the new utopia of our times, the internet and the social networks, its promise to a more equal and flat society where every end user is a content manufacturer and consumer, we are all contributing to this forming global “hive-mind”. This reality of today is put in this book on steroids when combining it with the new technologies coming soon upon us, from VR, to brain to brain communications and genetic modification. How a world where we could all share our thoughts directly with anyone else in the network would look like? How would a world that social rank its network users would like? This book really makes you think if this world that we live in today with all its promises to a better world, really doesn’t turn us all into mindless herd zombies and our human relationships artificial and superficial? And who control this power vested in the network and for what purpose? The book follows after the stories of a few characters in this dystopic/utopic world all have been outcast from the network and their life seems to be erased from existence and/or importance. In that sense it is a little reminiscent of Phillip K. Dick stories, where the individual usually find himself in an estranged world searching for meaning. Eventually all utopia ends in a bloodbath and this one is not so different, it is very much worth reading. 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book!!! By Jolie Before I do my review, I have to put up this disclaimer: I received this product from Tomoson and EBookPro for free for my honest review. Any and all opinions expressed in this review are mine and mine alone. I received no financial compensation for this review.I really really liked this book. If you are into fantasy/techno thriller/dystopia….then read this book. It will give you chills.I can totally see some of the technology in the book (mainly the app where you can order the perfect babies) being developed and used. And I could see the trend happening in real life that happened in the book.Which is scary. The book to lag a little in the middle but only for a couple of chapters. The author did a wonderful job getting momentum back going in the book. Will I read this again? YesWill I reccomend it to family and friends? Yes See all 45 customer reviews...
