A Fascinating, Adventurous Life By Robert Kimmel Peripatetic: A Memoir by Daniel Dorian "Peripatetic" is indeed an appropriate title for this riveting self exploration by a man whose adventurous life becomes intertwined with an infinite number of historical events. Readers will find the book a spellbinding account of how an enterprising young Parisian, whose religious identity during childhood was camouflaged during the dangerous Nazi occupation of France, pivots from the pursuit of an acting career to journalism and film-making across the Atlantic. Only years later does he fully learn of his Jewish heritage. Daniel Dorian vividly takes us through a transformation that includes participation with a military unit performing shows through dangerous areas of French occupied Algeria, to his becoming an American with deep feelings for his new country. He undertakes some acting opportunities and attends classes of Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio in New York. Then a brief stint teaching French language teachers authentic French at the University of Kentucky gives Dorian a glimpse of American life, different from his introduction to Manhattan, a location he loves. Back in New York, he teams up with radio personality Joe O'Brien to create a successful hit parade radio show for French and European audiences. Daniel's romantic interludes are related with candor and intimate detail, and his saga with a beautiful African American woman highlights those accounts. Freelance journalism for French and European news organizations finally pays enough for a better Manhattan existence, and leads to some encounters that only an innovative and aggressive news correspondent experiences. Dorian takes you behind the scenes as he covers events ranging from racial riots and disturbances in New York and, one in a section of Miami called Liberty City, where he is badly beaten and lucky to escape with his life, to space shots at Cape Canaveral. His writing flows as he relates his own uninhibited feelings about the historical moments unraveling around him. He rushes from place to place to report breaking news. His close up coverage of the space shots are wonderfully described; he reports on Charles de Gaulle's visit to Canada; a Pope's visit to New York, political conventions, White House conferences, and a variety of headline events. His reporting interprets their meaning, not just their happening. In describing his interviews and contacts with notables such as New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Salvador Dali, Marlon Brando, Sammy Davis Jr. and New York master builder Robert Moses, Dorian takes readers beyond their comments, and shares his personal views of their characters. The reader gets an insider's look at Air France's battle to have landing rights in New York for the Concorde, the first commercial supersonic airplane, as Daniel steps into his nearly nine year experience as a public relations executive for the airline. Once started, you'll remain glued, page after page, to Daniel Dorian's fascinating memoir. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Carpe Diem By Lola Dorian is a consummate storyteller who has quite a story to tell.As enjoyable as it is enlightening, Peripatetic, A Memoir opens a portal to the world of celebrity, politics and culture of the last half of the 20th century. As the author’s life story unfolds, the reader is taken on a riveting journey beginning with the war-weary days of his youth in Paris and the French Countryside, to his amorous adolescent adventures, his stint as a soldier in Algeria, to his efforts to become an actor—and all this before he makes the transatlantic crossing—where the story continues to astonish and delight. Dorian lands in New York in the early sixties, a vibrant, pivotal time in American history. He writes, “I had taken hold of my destiny. I was in control, maybe for the first time in my life. I felt no regrets, no fear.” Readers will celebrate his fearlessness as chapter by chapter, we’re given a front-row seat to some of the most momentous events in American contemporary culture, populated by both the famous and infamous characters he encountered along the way.The best memoirs offer teachable moments and Dorian’s keen observations and perceptive interpretation of the significant events of his life makes this a unique memoir in the finest traditions. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Rich, funny, tragic, historic, informative By C.G. Bauer So many people live rich, full lives just outside the shadow of celebrity because their job is to capture the essence of a story and not become the story itself. Journalists, photographers, interviewers, media moguls, public relations gurus, et al. This is a memoir that pulls these almost-famous activities together from someone who’s been there, and who was in a position to provide behind-the-scenes reporting of events as he witnessed them. Someone who was also on the cusp of this same celebrity earlier in his career, before he realized what his true calling was: a re-inventor of self -- the consummate peripatetic -- and a chronicler of history. The author is someone who turned a harrowing early life in war-torn France into a colorful, never-a-dull-moment life in the US. I enjoyed this memoir because it shows a person’s glee at experiencing life -- a life, as it turns out, that has been dramatic, frightening, heart-wrenching, and just plain way cool.
