Fowler knows the boom-and-bust cycles of the copper-mining business, and he plans to hoard cash to make it through the next downturn. After buying up a big chunk of Red Metal stock, Brown gives Fowler an ultimatum: Make smart investments with the money, or return it to shareholders. If you don’t, Galileo will find someone to acquire Red Metal, and you’ll go down as the CEO who let a 130-year-old company fade into oblivion. Will Fowler escape Brown, walk into Brown’s traps, or get spooked into making foolish moves that bring his world crashing down around him?

He has spent his adult life employed by major American corporations and has worked with arrogant CEOs, competent accountants, blowhards, loyal functionaries, and brilliant financial analysts. He knows what makes them tick, how they talk, and what they value. All this inside knowledge comes through in Red Metal, which is fundamentally the thinly disguised story of how the iconic copper mining company Phelps Dodge was acquired by the upstart Freeport McMoRan copper company.A great deal of pride and purposeful blindness led to that conquest. Faur has the knack for recreating it in fictional form which gives us access to private meetings and the thoughts of his protagonist, hedge fund maven, David Brown. At the heart of his novel is an explication of why a company which is successful, conservative, and cash rich can become the target of a hostile take over. That is not the stuff of your typical business novel which is more likely to deal with treachery, fraud, murder, and adultery which are inherently dramatic. Yet he manages to make esoteric financial maneuverings both understandable and interesting, no mean task.Don’t enter into your reading with expectations of a Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, or Nabokov. This is after all a first novel. But do look forward to a brisk encounter with the true underpinnings of the world of mining. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast reading with good doses of emotion and scorn By Amazon Customer Red Metal is a well written morality story centered in the worlds of finance and copper mines. It taunts the reader with the greed and desire to feel important at the expense of others; characteristics that personify the hedge fund manager. His behavior may enrage some readers as his methods are malicious and manipulative. He thinks himself above others due to his pride of achievement. His target CEO is a good man. The CEO has guided the company well. While the CEO is poor at social graces he cares about his employees and about the world at large. A good read. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Peter Faur Delivers a High Speed Ride Through the World of Corporate Finance By Len Gutman Red Metal is a fun story about the inner workings of big business finance. Peter Faur certainly knows his way around a balance sheet and his personal insights from his years in the copper industry make him the perfect person to tell this story about a renegade hedge fund manager and the old guard blue chip company that catches his eye. The story is filled with insider detail about the world of finance -- enough to make the reader feel like he or she is right there in the corporate boardroom. Written as a first-person account by the young and ambitious hedge fund manager David Brown, the author really takes you inside Brown's head and brings you along for the ride as he plots to make a killing off the rise of copper prices and a company too hesitant to move at the speed of today's market. The novel is also filled with great character development and plenty of insider references to Phoenix and New York City where the story takes place.I highly recommend this high finance adventure, but be warned, it's hard to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys!
