22gigantes.com - “Crouching down, I reached out my hand to him. He walked the space of maybe a yard, placing his tiny hand in mine, and then we somehow melted into each other. With my arms around him, I felt like I’d been his mama forever, but also only for a minute. I’d loved him always, but was just now feeling his little body next to mine.”This inspiring, three-part story chronicles one American family’s adoption of a young boy from the faraway Democratic Republic of Congo. Readers accompany the family through the trying waiting period, intriguing time in Congo, and first adjustment years home. Guided by candid and expressive narration and interspersed with reflective questions for adopting parents, it delivers both a gripping human-interest story, and a valuable resource for adopting families. Amidst faith and humor, the struggles and surprises of international adoption come to light, as a family searches for their son and finds themselves along the way.

A story of family and learning By Amazon Customer Searched the World Over for Elie, by Sherilyn Olsen, is a very detailed account of international adoption from Africa, more specifically, the Democratic Republic of Congo.Olsen has a gift for remembering the details of situations that many would forget. Perhaps this comes from her family setting where her husband works as a social worker and she works for the state performing workshops. Such backgrounds could explain her vast knowledge of social and children’s issues, as well as conditions that pervade different types of adoption. From visiting the city of Kinshasa to meetings with adoption agencies and all of the details of the “hurry up and wait” that defines international adoption, the reader is left with an arsenal of information on what lies in store for those who embark on this journey, as well as practical solutions that worked for the Olsen family. One of Olsen’s stated purposes of the book was to; “encourage and spark consideration, reflection, and planning for those who embark on their own adoption journey.” This task was perfectly executed. Many parents who adopt (not unlike me) feel a need to inform and convert others to the ways of adoption and helping children to navigate through that imperfect solution to a “perfect storm” of childhood trauma. Where we discover happiness, and particularly when such happiness is found by helping others to experience progression and joy, we feel a need to encourage others to experience the same joys and in the same ways. Sometimes we mistakenly believe that the same circumstances and conditions will work for anyone who commits themselves as we have. But Olsen is clear that adoption, and particularly the messiness that can come from international adoption, is not for everyone. There are times when I (a parent who has adopted internationally) wonder, myself, if things like sibling separation, survivor guilt, government and industry corruption, and other plagues that infest international adoption are right for anyone. But then I see the good that comes where children can have families and chances to be successful, which chances they would not have had, otherwise. Then I remember that in today’s world, more than ever, children need to have a family and that international adoption, while creating challenges and difficulties, does not generate more problems than it solves; while initiating pain, it does not incubate more suffering than it heals. Many parents who adopt are great people of faith, who see no way to navigate such difficulties without their belief in an intervening, providential, Invisible Hand. Like other such parents, it is obvious that Olsen not only believes in miracles; she relies on them. People of faith will recognize their own feelings while reading Searched the World Over for Elie. Those who are not uncomfortable with the Mormon propensity to tie their brand of faith to every aspect of everyday life and share those beliefs at every opportunity, will love this aspect of Olsen’s first full length book.Olsen’s explanation that the book evolved from her blog explains its style; being written primarily in the past tense. This works extremely well for conveying the details and information that Olsen uses to help others to consider adoption with a realistic understanding. It is also helpful for other parents who have adopted and are looking for information on some of the difficulties that come with this kind of family building. Most importantly, Searched the World Over for Elie is a story about family. It is a story about a child who finds parents and siblings to love him and give him a chance. It is also a story of a family, who needs a little boy, and everything he can teach them about a big, bad world, with tiny pockets of safety. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You don't have to be interested in adoption to love this story! By Joy L I have no connection to the author and no close connection to or interest in adoption. So I was greatly surprised at how immediately captivated I was by this story. I read the downloaded sample just in idle curiosity and then purchased the whole and read through the middle of the night, something I haven't done in years. I had MANY "more important," more relevant things to do but couldn't bring myself to put it down until I had read right through the final pages, including the notes. The writing has minor imperfections and repetitions (like introducing Julia multiple times to the reader) because the book grew out of a blog over 18 months of waiting. But these only serve to heighten the sense of honesty and authenticity and real-time thinking as you follow the Olsen's experience. This is a beautiful testimony, well written and well told, that God cares about people individually in a hundred ways. Kudos and thanks to Ms. Olsen and to eLectio Publishing for finding this unforgettable, inspiring story! I'll be thinking about it for years to come. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this beautiful book brought back some very tender feelings for me By Jodi West As the lucky mother of two adopted children, this beautiful book brought back some very tender feelings for me. Our adoption experiences were different in so many ways from the author's, but there were also many similarities. I loved how Sherilyn was able to write about her experiences in Africa in such a way that I felt I was right there with her. My heart ached as she described the heartaches and disappointments they experienced during their waiting process. And I also cried tears of joy as she met her son for the first time. Adoption is a beautiful blessing to so many people, but is hard to completely understand unless you've been through it yourself. This book was able to touch on some of the aspects of adoption that are hard to explain. I have also given this book as gifts to others and they enjoyed it as much as I did without having experienced adoption first- hand. I highly recommend this book for adoptive and non-adoptive families. It is a quick and tender read. But, you may want to make sure to have some tissues handy! See all 33 customer reviews...
