By WAlbert Smith The ABC's of Authentic Me provides insightful empathy into everyday life. The author uses an effective structure for each letter to arrive at her 'simple truths': from explanation, to experience and exposition, then finally emotion through poetry. There's comfort in the rhythm that helps makes the book an enjoyable, breezy read. The light prose occasionally has typos or curious word choices, but the more I read the more I found this as part of the book's charm. There's relatability in imperfection, and indeed the voice the author uses feels at once familiar and approachable. The content of the book draws largely from the author's own experiences in her search to find common ground with the reader. Each letter of the alphabet provides a basis (sometimes multiple) to explore new ways to approach your life. Some entries will resonate more with certain readers than others, but she is adept at providing new angles with which to approach well-worn topics. A brief quote from 'Courage':"Why not?... If not me, then who?"All too often people equate "courage" with staunchness against the storm, an almost lone-wolf mentality. What the author so elegantly suggests is that "courage" is often not centered on the individual, but its benefits to the whole. Courage is not only for oneself, but can be shelter for those who are struggling to find it in themselves. These nuggets of insight are a hallmark of the book, and of the experiences the author went through to become the positive force she is today. Although in some cases I wish the author had gone more into the results of her experiences, not just related to the virtue... I want to know what happened from her stand-up routine! And it is fitting that 'Learning' is the longest entry in the book. There is a vulnerability shown here, where the author describes "learned helplessness" and her own difficulties in overcoming when one "internalizes the outcome and sees it as a repetitive pattern that they cannot control and overcome":"I listened to motivational audio. I meditated. I cried. I sought help. I stopped taking things so personally. I stopped taking myself so seriously. I stopped feeding my demons with my thoughts."And after all her ordeals, she concludes: "Everything is mere perception. The truth about life is that we can choose - we are a product of our past, but certainly we don't have to fall victim to it..... After all, if we are not growing, then what else is there"?Full disclaimer: this is not my type of book. I prefer non-fiction myself, (except when the next edition of A Song of Ice and Fire comes out!) and would rather read about the world than about myself. I've also found that many self-discovery books can carry undertones of a pompous "know it all" attitude, or they can feel robotic and cold. However, ABC's of Authentic Me maintains a warm, conversational tone throughout, which evokes memories of intimate moments with family and friends alike. It is this spirit that is the book's greatest strength: it gives the sense that the words you are reading are spoken in the voice of the people you trust the most. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I had the good fortune to meet the author of Authentic Me and ... By John David I had the good fortune to meet the author of Authentic Me and was struck by her composure and strong sense of self. Ms Ly makes a powerful first impression and her desire to have a positive impact on those around her is immediately clear. Her book is not a self-help book in any traditional sense but rather a collection of collected wisdom, personal insight, and relatable anecdotes. Each one of the "letters of the alphabet" chapters contains a simple yet impactful combination of these elements in the clear voice of a person truly dedicated to helping others. There are a lot of books out there claiming to "fix " or "guide" you. This isn't one of them. This is someone trying to do what a lot of use are trying to do. Be better today and tomorrow than yesterday. She just selflessly shares the experiences of her personal journey in a way many will find helpful in their own path of personal development. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
