22gigantes.com - "The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings" (1899) is a collection of connected thriller stories by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace. Madame Koluchy is the head of a secret society. Why is it secret? Is the leader a master criminal? Excerpt: "THAT a secret society could ever have existed in the London of our day may seem impossible. Such a society, however, not only did exist, but through the instrumentality of a woman of unparalleled capacity and genius, obtained a firm footing. A century ago the Brotherhood of the Seven Kings was a name hardly whispered without horror and fear in Italy, and now, by the fascinations and influence of one woman, it began to accomplish fresh deeds of unparalleled daring and subtlety in London. By the wide extent of its scientific resources, and the impregnable secrecy of its organizations, it threatened to become, a formidable menace to society, as well as a source of serious anxiety to the authorities of the law."

Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. women villains By S. L. Cheek You're really missing something if you haven't tried any of these mystery stories by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace. Although to get the full flavor of her women villains, you need to find a copy of the Sorceress of the Strand. I believe it's been reprinted, but if not, it should be easy to dig up a used copy of Rivals of Sherlock Holmes edited by Alan (?) Russell. Most of the stories are in that. These two authors had some delicious ideas about women and crime (the Sorceress of the Strand is a evil beautician, for example).... If you like sultry spies, you might enjoy the flavor of what a demure Edwardian woman could be like when she went over to the dark side....The Sorceress Of The Strand 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Discovery By Mudge What a good idea to publish a well-formatted Kindle edition of a book many of us will never have heard of but will be delighted to discover.L.T. Meade (Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith) published over 300 books between about 1870 and 1915. Many of these were written for younger readers (and her girls’ stories were particularly popular), but she also wrote mysteries, often in collaboration with male authors, such as this one. Published in 1899, “The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings” has a little of the flavor of the Sherlock Holmes stories being published around the same time.Meade and Eustace’s book, enhanced by wonderful illustrations from the first edition, is a great read, with the master criminal a woman, Madame Koluchy, who is head of a very evil secret society. The unraveling of the mystery makes for gripping reading and I look forward to seeing more of the collaborative novels of Meade and Eustace. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fussy but good early thriller By Douglas J. Bassett Late Victorian - actually probably better classified as "Aesthetic/Decadent" - mystery/thriller focusing around a secret society and a strange woman much loved by the populace who's a source of pure evil. The kind of book that is liable to be overrated by a certain type of reader, as it's very interesting historically: it's an early appearance of the "femme fatale", it's an early appearance of the "secret society wreaking havoc" idea, and generally it's just an early appearance of the thriller period. The question, though, is whether or not it's worth reading today. I'd say....sorta. It has its flaws, like a lot of early thrillers it doesn't really cohere well together and is more a collection of related short stories than an actual novel. Meade and Eustace are more concerned with evoking mood, too, than actual storytelling - ultimately the book doesn't really go anywhere, we end the story pretty much where we began. That said, this kind of book has an inherent pleasure to it, we've fallen far from this standard of popular storytelling. It's literate, evocative in some spots, and certainly does move. I wouldn't say a "must read", but you won't hate yourself for reading. Most easily available electronically for free. See all 4 customer reviews...
