22gigantes.com - Tiptoes Lightly lives in an acorn high up in the branches of a great oak tree. The Festival of Stones follows her adventures, and those of her friends, through the festivals of Michaelmas, Halloween, Martinmas, Advent and Christmas. At Michaelmas a real dragon appears, as does St. Michael, and Farmer John tells the story of 'The Most Beautiful Dragon in the Whole World' to his children.Other tales are told too. An angel tells the story of 'Martin's Light' at Martinmas, at the Festival of Animals Tiptoes recounts how the animals were sung into the world in 'The Myth of Ella-jah', and Farmer John reads 'The Burden Bull of Scotland' to his children on Christmas day. On the way Jeremy Mouse has a frightening encounter at Halloween (with a you-know-what-kind of vegetable!) and almost drowns while sliding on ice (luckily he is saved by Mr. Owl the Vegetarian). At the farm, the children meet the Borodat who lives in the barn, and on Christmas night June Berry dreams of her mother who has passed over the threshold. In the last chapter the world's first snow-mouse is made by Jeremy Mouse-helped by Tiptoes and the house fairies, Pins and Needles. The Festival of Stones is lavishly illustrated by the artist-author. They are reverent, humorous, sanguine and spiritual. They are innocent and magical tales, suitable for reading to young children or for young children to read.

By EDS I bought this to use as part of our homeschool co-op with Waldorf minded friends, and we have loved it. Even though the kids had just turned three they would sit and listen to these easy to animate stories. Now we are approaching 4 years old, and they want more! When the 6-7 year old siblings sit in with us, they also love it. We loved how the stories went along with the celebrations of autumn and winter time. Very fun and filled with imagination. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Celebrate with Tiptoes By M. Berry This is our second Tiptoes book and the second in the delightful series of magical tales by Reg Down about the little fairy named Tiptoes Lightly. In Festival of Stones, we follow the continuing adventures of Tiptoes and her animal, human and gnome companions through the fall and winter, including the many festivals of these seasons: Michaelmas, Halloween, Martinmas, Advent and Christmas. Although my children (4 and 6) attend a Waldorf school and it deepens their understanding of these festivals, the book is more than accessible to any preschool to early grade school child who loves stories about forest friends and celebrations. The lovely line illustrations are the perfect compliment to this chapter book. We usually read two chapters a night, often with a request for "just one more." The plot is easy to follow but varying enough to hold their attention night after night. We love this book and plan to revisit it year after year. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Reg Down stories are wonderful By Rachel H I love reg down stories so much. These are some of my 4 and 6 year olds favorite stories. They are nature based, sweet and fun. We have issues with so many children's books seeming like they are talking down to children or awkwardly about teaching a lesson. These are just good stories that don't feel like they have any ulterior motives. See all 35 customer reviews...
"This is a fascinating book by an extraordinarily imaginative writer. There is great value to this work. The whole time I read it I could imagine the faces of 5 or 6 year olds listening to the stories. Borrow or buy? Buy! Parents of preschoolers and children in the primary grades need this book. It is a fun read and the kids will want to hear about Tiptoes Lightly and her friends over and over again." --The Reading Tub About the Author Reg Down grew up in Canada, Namibia, South Africa and Ireland.
