A Necessary Companion for Our Times By Marc Lapin Wild Earth Wild Soul is a necessary companion on the journey of our time--to co-create sustainable ways of living, including culture that truly connects us all to each other and to earth. This book is a must for anyone involved with or wanting to learn about the ways forward in the Great Turning. "The Transition Handbook" by Rob Hopkins lays out important technical steps we can take, whereas in Wild Earth Wild Soul Bill Pfeiffer gifts us a manual for the heart and spirit work that is the foundation that inspires the human endeavor to live meaningfully, beautifully and lastingly in earth. Pfeiffer lays out the historical and theoretical context in his own lovely, accessible voice as well as by quoting much wisdom from Natives of many lands (a number of whom he has studied with), elders, scientists, and others. The more important treasure in his book, however, is the abundance of practices that enable us to experience, strengthen and live earth connection and earth-based culture. You won't find such a great assortment of activities for knowing nature and ourselves (no difference really, is there?) in any other book. Bill provides a design for longer workshops, but you can also use the activities he describes in lots of other settings. I will use some of these activities in the college environmental science classes I teach as well as workshops I facilitate; many of them can be used in two-hour to two-day workshops. You can even do these at home in small groups. Some can be done alone, but we really need to build ecstatic earth-based culture together. As Pfeiffer points out, evolutionarily we're tribal beings, yet so many of us have been floating without our tribes. This book shows the way back for bringing together people to live with respect and honor in the great circle of life. This book has a lot to add to the library of recent books that includes Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone's "Active Hope," Hopkins' "Transition Handbook," David Abram's "Becoming Animal," Jeremy Hayward's "Letters to Vanessa" and the works of Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The gift of Wild Earth, Wild Soul By Pam McDonald Bill begins with a succinct, coherent, and easy-to-read rationale for developing awareness and trust in our deepest core selves, as we navigate life on a living planet in the midst of a profound transformation. In the second part of the book Bill shares specific group activities that lead participants to a felt sense of who we are as individuals, what we are in the midst of, and what is next, not in a predictive sense, but rather, in the sense of choosing from who "I am."Bill interweaves the wisdom of 100 writers and poets (Thomas Berry, Fritjof Capra, Riane Eisler, Rainer Maria Rilke, Joanna Macy, Bill Plotkin, Brian Swimme, Eckhart Tolle, Starhawk, Marshall Rosenberg, Duane Elgin, Robinson Jeffers, and so many others) distilling their insights into one, flowing and coherent whole. The absolute beginner will find easy language and a manageable conceptual framework. The deeply traveled may discover words, phrases, paragraphs, that "click" and are useful for communicating and leading more effectively.Chapter Headings:Why a Wild Earth Intensive? How to Use This BookA Note to Guides and FacilitatorsA Spiritual PermacultureGetting Started: Guidelines and OverviewListeningFeeling and HealingNature Immersion and ConnectionThe Power of StoryCeremonyAltered States of Consciousness [not drug induced]PlayStillnessElders and MentorsThe Magic of Mentoring: Including an Interview with Mark MoreyArt and MusicVision and ManifestationFinal ThoughtsA 7-page bibliography and 16 pages of endnotesWhether the culture inherent in this book speaks to your soul or terrifies you, or both, this loving book offers a conceptual and experiential framework for supporting the individual, and the individual as leader, to integrate gracefully into a world of authentic living on Planet Earth.
